Anything falling into the ocean from 3 kilometers up, especially when it is as fragile as an airliner,is going to end up in a million little pieces. It happened with the French plane over the Atlantic last year, with the SAA plane in the Indian Ocean in the 80's, etc. the pieces were not very big at all. It's like hitting concrete from that hight.

Why its called that is during WW2 a crew transporting a B-17 flying fortress from one side of the country to the other, disappeared. No one knew what happened to it until some years after the way, when they found it on top of a 12,840+ foot peak next to cloud peak. It was totally demolished, the largest piece was about the size of a 4 door sedan, but most parts were the size of your fist, and many shoved under several tons of rock. Naturally, no one was alive to tell about it, though they think that at least one person may have actually survived the crash based on the position of the body, but due to the fact he was so high up on the peak in what was likely bad weather and severely injured never made it off the peak. The army removed the weapons and bodies and left the wreckage-some of it is still there today (not as much as their used to be thanks to souvenir hunters) I actually visited the site in high school, been wanting to get back up to it at some point but finding the time and someone to go with me has been difficult, it is a very difficult hike and not one that you can safely do alone.
