Historical Christian Site Said to Be Found

13 minutes ago World - AP

By LAURIE COPANS, Associated Press Writer

CANA, Israel - Among the roots of ancient olive trees, archaeologists have found pieces of large stone jars of the type the Gospel says Jesus used when he turned water into wine at a Jewish wedding in the Galilee village of Cana.

They believe these could have been the same kind of vessels the Bible says Jesus used in his first miracle, and that the site where they were found could be the location of biblical Cana. But Bible scholars caution it'll be hard to obtain conclusive proof

Some broken jars from about the right period, presumably much like broken jars to be found in the remains of anyother building in the area of about the same age. Sounds like a good way of parting gullible tourists of their cash.

This coming from someone gullable enough to believe a bogus "historian" like Benny Morris. You have no room to talk.

I tend to share Amor's scepticism on this one.

Nearly every inch of Israel is strewn with pottery shards of all types and ages.

It would have been wiser for the professional historians and archaeologists to actually authenticate the ancient site of Cana...and then to authenticate the dwelling where Jesus turned the water into wine...and then the shards of pottery.

As far as I am aware this is just about impossible unless some inscription is found...and many of those make a convenient appearance these days.

Sensationalism does aid cash-strapped projects with free advertising and finds a special willingness amongst some of the more gullible to walk on the path before the cement has dried.

Actually, I agree with Botz.

My first thought on hearing this was, "So, was the wedding feast where Jesus turned water into wine the only wedding that ever took place in Cana?" :emot-hug:

Well then, what do you think of this latest find?

New Finds Unearthed at Reputed Jesus Miracle Site

Thu Dec 23, 9:19 AM ET Science - Reuters

By Matthew Tostevin

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Archaeologists in Jerusalem have unearthed a paved assembly area and water channel at the site of a pool where some Christians believe Jesus gave sight to a blind man, Israel's Antiquities Authority said on Thursday.

The discovery allows them to build a better picture of what the Siloam Pool might have looked like nearly 2,000 years ago -- suggesting it was meant for ritual immersion rather than for use as a reservoir as some have thought.

"We have excavated it and dated it very accurately with coins found in the cement which the pool was built of," Roni Reich of Haifa University, one of the dig leaders, told Reuters. "Hopefully we can continue the dig."

The earliest coins to be found dated from the middle of the century before Jesus's birth.

A wide flight of steps has been uncovered leading down toward the site. A narrow channel carries water through the honey-colored rocks.

The Siloam Pool is mentioned in the Bible's New Testament as the place where Jesus performed the miracle of giving sight to a man who was blind from birth -- first anointing his eyes with clay and then telling him to wash in the pool.

"He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing," the New Testament Book of John says.

The pool, which has been a focus of research since the 19th century, is also mentioned in Jewish historical sources as the site of water considered to be ritually pure for use in ceremonies.

After Islam came to the Holy Land, the pool is thought to have remained in use for bathing and its waters were seen by some as having healing powers.

The site is near Jerusalem's walled Old City, in territory captured by Israel in the 1967 Middle East war and then annexed in a move not recognized internationally.

warm regards

Hey -

Please don't think I'm knocking the findings about finding the things mentioned in the Bible - it was the use of the title making it sound like these were the jars used when the miracle took place.

Now, if the title referred to the finding of the jars as evidence of finding Cana or of the evidence that these jars were actually used (evidence to the historical accuracy of the account), then I'd say, "Great!"

I hope that makes a bit more sense. :emot-hug:

As far as the new find, if they found the Pool of Siloam - yipee!

He's a slightly more credible historian than you sunshine, you might not like his conclusions, but he bases them on facts that you seem to be in denial about and which it would be rather silly to derail discussing here as there is at least one other huge thread on the issue elsewhere.

Returning this case which as far as I can see has nothing to do with the issue at hand here, well, do really you believe these are likely to be the "real jars"? Or do you see any opportunity to criticize me as valid, howewer ridiculous your criticisms make you look?

The findings on the Pool at Siloam sound interesting and I would think there are much better substantiated records of this than a certain house in an unsubstantiated town. It reads better in the Greek that the pool of Siloam was a ritual bath/Mikveh and the ritualistic cleansing was symbolic of purity....but mikvehs were fairly common from my understanding and they would need further proof to set this apart from the others.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
