Muslim G.I. says he won't go

By MAGGIE HABERMAN

DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

Ghanim Khalil doesn't want to break the law, but says he may be forced to.

The 26-year-old Army National Guard reservist said yesterday that if he's called up to help fight Iraq in the coming weeks, he'll refuse to go.

"If I'm asked to go to the Middle East, I will not," Khalil, of Staten Island, said at a news conference yesterday before he headed over to the anti-war rally near the United Nations.

"I believe if this war occurs, it is a violation of human rights," added Khalil, a Muslim with Pakistani roots.

Khalil, a supply specialist, said he has been given no date for when his unit at the Marcy Ave. Armory in Brooklyn might be called up.

"I've been told that it's only a matter of time," he said.

Khalil sat with members of the advocacy group Citizen Soldier, some of whom are veterans of past wars who are opposed to another Iraqi conflict.

Khalil, who spent four years on active duty with the Marines, said some of his opposition stems from his religious beliefs.

"As a Muslim, I have objections" to the war, he said.

But he called his protests universal, saying people of all faiths have spoken out against Persian Gulf War II.

Khalil said he realized he could go to jail if he refuses to follow orders

There are muslims over in the Persian gulf in our military though. Some I personally know of. This war is not against the muslim religion, as Saddam wears that like a shirt. Its not anything sincere with him. The propaganda artists are working, and Saddam just loves all those protesters too. We need to stand united.

It's funny this guy was a reservist and didn't mind collecting his weekend warrior pay for being held in "reserve" but now it's time to 'pay up'.

I come from a long line of military...father's retired Air Force, mother was active duty Air Force, I was active duty Air Force during Viet Nam, my husband was Coast Guard...and so on.

People become "Weekend Warriors"  {reserves} thinking one weekend a month brings in a few extra bucks. Time for them to honor their commitments and do what they promised to do.

Well, he will be prosecuted under UCMJ and given the next 20 years to ponder his decision.

Um, he's kidding there, right? What 'human rights' would the allies be "violating"? The right to have illegal weapons of mass destruction?  :sarcasm:  :sarcasm:  Let's not violate human rights, Muslims are very sensitive to that. :sarcasm:  :sarcasm: I mean, after all, Muslims are real big on human rights - especially for their women, right?  :sarcasm:  :sarcasm:  And, Saddam Hussein is a great humanitarian, right?  :sarcasm:  :sarcasm:  :sarcasm:

What an embarrassment to the Marine Corp that they let this guy in. What a disgrace he is.

This is what I mean, WIP...same thing.

He gets reservist pay and is more than happy to collect the $$$ while he sits on his XXXX  and then balks at doing what he's paid to do. Hello?

I remember when I was in Navy reserves, I got out pretty quick because I just hated it. Yes, I got my pay but they didn't give us anything to do. We just sat around and played cards.

I always tried to get them to give me something productive to do but the "guys" would laugh and say, "Hey, easy money...stop complaining".

Okay. I just got out. I didn't want "easy money"...I like to earn my keep. Besides, I'm not into fifty games of Spades. Get's old after awhile.

Sadly, I think some of these same guys in reserves just get too addicted to sitting around and doing nothing. Then they  get paid for doing nothing.

Ask them to earn a living and they whine.  Growl!

At least we won't have to worry about his internal conflict while we're over there. As someone who will soon be joining the fight in the desert, I'm glad he decided to show his true colors now instead of over there with a rifle in his hand.

Good point, Ted...

BTW, I just got through watching Dan Rather's interview with Saddam Hussein. Just wondering if anybody else saw this most fascinating interview.

I saw just enough to know which side Dan Rather is on. Funny how he hasn't extended the same invitation for an interview to his own president!

There seems to be an instant reaction by the media to blame the US for any and all conflicts in the world. Maybe, if we gassed our own people and butchered thousands of innocent people, we could get the sympathy of the networks too.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Daniel: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 3

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
