For those who believe that the Sabbath is not Sunday or a particular day, and that the Sabbath is ANY DAY, what is your exegesis of this passage:

Matthew 24:20 And pray that your flight may not be in winter or on the Sabbath. 21 For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be.

Then I would also as a side note ask:  "Can prayer change a preordained day of judgment in the last days?"

Anxiously awaiting your interpretations.........(you know who you are.  )

Suzanne

I believe that the Sabbath is on the 7th Day of the week...which is called Saturday.

Prayer can change alot of things, but I don't think it would change the day of judgement.

So in context of your reasoning, that the Sabbath can be ANY day.........then, in  your understanding, the text is basically saying, "Pray that your  flight is NOT ON ANY DAY AT ALL?  Do you believe that these things of the end will even happen at all?  That is really your understanding of these Words?

I really cannot understand how something so direct, is being twisted into whatever we choose to want it to be?

So if Jesus said this to you today, would you really interpret it as anything else other than what He actually said, or would you try to reason that He meant something else?

Greetings TSTH,

You keep emphasizing the Sabbath, WHY? What similarity does the Sabbath have with Winter? Isn't the verses saying that both times are a bad time to flee? So please tell me what makes the two times ALIKE?

Blessings,

Dad Ernie

There is no credible theological/hermenuetic grounds for saying that the "Sabbath" here is a reference to the seventh day of the week. It is celebrated in Israel today, and one could surmise that Jesus knew that it would still be celebrated in Israel at the time of the tribulation.

There is no veiled reference to something else, or some other theological concept applied in this passage.

Those caught in the legalistic observance of the Sabbath will not be able to save their own lives, and one can imagine the hardships with having to make a difficult and swift journey in the winter.

tsth, you are correct that the Sabbath is a day, not just everyday, although we should live everyday as unto the Lord, and not just be "Sunday Christians".

I often relate back to what Jesus said about the first and second greatest commandments.

Love the Lord thy God with all thy heart soul and mind, and love thy neighbor as thyself. (Mark 12:30-31)

If we love the Lord with all our being will we not fear Him?

1. I AM the Lord thy God.

If we love the Lord with all our being will we make another god for ourselves?

2. Thou shalt have no other gods before Me.

If we love the Lord with all our being will we go around using His name like foul language?

3. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.

If we love the Lord with all our being will we shrug off the solemn assembling of the saints? Will we take so little thought to it being a holy gift from the Lord?

4. Remember the Sabbath to keep it holy.

Now comes our love for people.

If we love our parents will we treat them with disfavor? or disobedience?

5. Honor thy father and thy mother.

If we love others will we murder them? or hate them?

6. Thou shalt not murder.

If we love others will we behave sexually impure? or lust after someone?

7. Thou shalt not commit adultry.

If we love others will we steal from them?

8. Thou shalt not steal.

If we love others will we lie about them? or to them?

9. Thou shalt not bear false witness.

If we love others will we greedily hunger after their things?

10. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbors things.

Romans 13:10

Love worketh no ill to his neighbor: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

When we are born again we are born of God. God is love and He lives in our heart, and who teaches us to love except His Spirit! Jesus taught the Beatitudes straight from love. He told us how love is and showed us by His example and sent us His Spirit to teach us and help us bear its fruit.

He did NOT do away with the 4th commandment any more than He did away with the first or 6th. He did, however, show us the way to receive a heart of flesh and do away with those hearts of stone. He is the Way. He is the Lord of the Sabbath. Jesus showed us what love does on the Sabbath day...Mercy... He showed us that the Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.

And we need to reverence the Lord when we are assembled together in Church. It is a place of solemn worship, a place where people can be set free, place to hear His voice in the prophetic, and preached word. It is a place where the lost can come in and be convinced, convicted and saved.

Why Jesus said to pray the flight would not be on the Sabbath is not really clear to me. I read Matthew Henry's commentary on this verse but it seems like there should be more.

Thank you very much jesussaves. You understood my post!!! It was NOT about legalism at all. And your reference to the solemn assembly sure hit a nerve too! But that's another thread: Where Is the Solemn Assembly Today?

I am like you, I have to wonder exactly what was the importance??? DE, I do admit that you do give food for thought, and I understand what you are saying in terms of then and the "rigid" observance of the Sabbath, but I also believe that it has relevance for today as well, and I do believe that the Sabbath in terms of it's function is still vital and needed even today. I believe that the Lord still wants us to honor one day/specific day as Holy. Stone me if you want  , but I do still believe that the Sabbath should be kept as Holy. And that text just defined the Sabbath as ONE day, as opposed to SEVEN.

In His Love,

Suzanne

Jesus said, "If you love me, keep my commandments." (John 14:15).

Keeping the Sabbath doesn't mean that you are a legalists.

For a legalists will keep the law in order to be saved...not realizing that a Christan keeps the law because he is saved.

Jesus travelled and "worked" on the Sabbath, how do you personally resolve that apparent conflict? Can you point out the scripture where Jesus personally makes keeping the sabbath one of HIS commandments?

I agree that the Sabbath is one specific day of the week. I also believe that one of the main points of Christ's message is that we should not allow the observance of the sabbath to interfere with our Christianity.

Matthew 24:20 And pray that your flight may not be in winter or on the Sabbath. 21 For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be.

Just curious, how many of you believe that this statement is in regard to the present time/our day, and of the end and Christ's 2nd coming?

How many of you believe that this message was only for the Jews during the time it was spoken, and not relevant to us today?

Greetings TSTH,

I believe that the Olivet Discourse has a duel fulfillment. Once for the Jews which applied to 70 A.D. and once for the whole world at the end of days. 70 A.D. was the most horrific of times that ever beset Israel.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
