Why do we care what they do in syria? Why is supporting a bunch of radical revolutionary islamists with direct ties to al Nusra, the syrian branch of al qaeda, better than supporting bashir assad? Putin has no ideations of conquering the united states or any such thing. He has a big country with a lot of potential insofar as natural resources and a lot of history.
