My whole point has been that 100 years ago people read those same prophesies and thought the end was near.  200 years ago people read those same prophesies and thought the end was near.  That is the nature of prophesies, nobody really knows for sure what they mean.

I have never understood the focus on the end times, they are going to happen regardless of what we do, so why focus on it or worry about it?

I can see your point, and there is no honest reason to worry about it. Some Christians couldn't care less about watching out for the End Times and they have every right to do so. Faith in Christ should be sufficient enough not to care about these things.

But God gave us prophecy for a reason. Some Christians will observe this and try to interpret what it all means. The prophetic signs are meant as warnings, not just for our sakes but for the sakes of non-believers too who may be lost sheep waiting to find Jesus but they haven't found him yet. Remember that today's Atheist may be tomorrow's Christian and those who appear to be unsaved now may be saved at a later date. Every day many people are turning to Christ. Prophecy is not just a warning, it is confirmation of God's promises. We are perfectly justified in observing and interpreting the signs that God has promised that he will give us.

Of course, we may interpret these prophecies incorrectly as many have done throughout history, but today is unlike any other time that has ever occurred before. Prophecy is often confusing until it gets closer to the time and sometimes we are not aware of it happening until it has passed. With the benefit of hindsight we can then conclude that a prophecy has been fulfilled. However, some prophecies become crystal clear just before they are about to happen and then we can prepare ourselves.

This could be very well happen..

if you want the details of the prophecies one should read Tom Horn and Chris Putnam's book Peterus Romanus.   It's about 500 pages of some really in-depth research on what the Catholic Church sees as it's future through several prophecies.

As Tom notes in his book, these prophecies are not Scripture, but there seems to be a lot to them considering recent history.   It was this book's background information that caused them to predict the retirement of Benedict about a year before he resigned (to the very month)...  fascinating reading.

I would at least say that it appears that this Pope sees himself as fulfilling several of the old prophecies.

Your arguments are really not all that different than those of 50 years ago or 100 years ago or...well you get the idea.

I have never been inclined to end times prophecy as I do not come from that background and so I do not see the end round every corner . But to answer your statement about 100 -50 years ago . Did we have nuclear power then ,or universal communication  ? Since the WWW2  ended , the population of the world has doubled at least ,and world powers are developing in a way never before which will make www2, look a storm in a tea cup in comparison .

There has never been in the written history of the world a bigger possibility for total catastrophy . The only possible way to avoid it would be for the majority to turn to Jesus Christ . I believe God is allowing a period of grace ( in an age where  most people have access to the bible on the internet), a prolonged period , in which to know the Truth , before He finally removes His protection, and lets those who are anti-christs,  perish  .

God's creation works on precise laws ,which when broken put the balance of life in jeopardy, both spiritual and physical .This can only continue for a limited period before the Holy Spirit withdraws Grace ,and lets those who are determinedly Anti -God ,Fall into he Abyss . We are as I said ,not in there, because there are many real believers who still have to finish their work , and souls, which have not been sufficiently exposed to  Jesus Christ as yet  .

Matt. 16 "When evening comes you say ,'It will be fair weather ,forthe sky is red ,and in the morning, 'Today will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast ,but you cannot interpret the signs of the times,  'A wicked and adulterous generation, looks for a miraculous sign ,  but none will be given it , except for the Sign of Jonah ".

It was replaced...but it was not the end of days now was it.

Yes ,All things which do not live according to God's laws of order and of love perish ,and all things  in God's creation have a beginning and an end, except God and those who choses to live in Eternity with Him  . All else perishes ; all that was like Rome in  todays world  will perish . And it is true, that it seems that Rome was worse , if you look at some of the leaders , but there was much about Rome which was good and creative .

Jesus had not yet come to offer a way to life and o there was an emphasis on the material and sexual gratification ,because they knew no better .In a post christian society we are living with a Choice that they did not have .

You are wrong too, that Rome was worse . Sexuality ,pornography is world wide now , for sale . Science is meddling in Frankenstein experiments ,as well as the destructive power of modern science ,and much more . No, you are wrong about Rome as the worst happened at the end of the Empire ,not at the beginning . So it will get worse before it gets better .
