Scripture Memorization

I used to be really big into memorizing scripture. I have slacked off in the last few years. I want to get back into it, and wanted to know if anybody here had any good advice on how best to do it. Any words of wisdom or things that worked good for you? Any good articles or websites?

I actually have slacked off as well. When I did commit a lot of Scripture to memory, the source was from listening to sermons.

When I first started to memorize scripture for Bible quizzing back in 1992, I would memorize large chunks at a time. The problem was if it was Acts 2:1-10, and you asked me to quote verse 9, I would have to go through verses 1-8 in my head to remember verse 9. That is when I started to memorize the reference with the verse. It does take more time, but it helps out in the long run.

My pastor told me once that if you had to choose, it is better to know where to find 100 verses in the Bible when you need them, then to memorize 25 straight out. I like to have the best of both worlds if I can.

When I worked at Starbucks I wrote everything down I had to memorize on 3x5 cards. I did that with scripture too.

Several years ago, I attended a Christian School, and one of the things I had to do, was memorize great CHUNKS of Scripture.

I clearly remember sitting down after school, and studying masses of Scripture, and then asking my Mum to test me.

At the age of 8 , I could remember and speak whole chapters from the Bible.

I spent two years at this school. During that time, I diligently memorized hundreds of verses.

I can remember nearly all these verses, even though I left the school four years ago.

The way I memorized them is simple:

Take a piece of Scripture you want to learn, and get a Bible marker.

The trick is, to take it one or two verses at a time.

Mark the first verse , and learn it. Then as you continue, mark and learn until you have completed the designated piece. Get someone to test you.

Another way just as helpful, is to write down one or two verses at a time, and LEARN it! When you have learned it , add another verse and so on.

I am now Home-schooled, and part of my curriulum is still to learn Scripture, but not such pieces! Because of the discipline, I had in the school, I find it quite easy!

I'm with Constant and Rusty. I write them down to memorize them. I put them on index cards and will post them somewhere in my apartment. When I'm in the shower, I start quoting the scripture I'm trying to memorize. Just my method!

The more you read, the more you know . . . .

I confess I've been slack on the direct memorization part, but I am familiar with many, many Scriptures and stories just because I've read them over and over so many times. I may not be able to give exact quotes to Scriptures, but I can sure paraphrase them pretty close to the actual words! I know most of the New Testament this way, actually.

Not to say you shouldn't be proactive in memorizing, but just thought I'd offer another aspect, incase this helps!
