Name Changes in the Bible

sa 62:2 And the Gentiles shall see thy righteousness, and all kings thy glory: and thou shalt be called by a new name, which the mouth of the LORD shall name.

Isa 62:3 Thou shalt also be a crown of glory in the hand of the LORD, and a royal diadem in the hand of thy God.

Isa 62:4 Thou shalt no more be termed Forsaken; neither shall thy land any more be termed Desolate: but thou shalt be called Hephzibah, and thy land Beulah: for the LORD delighteth in thee, and thy land shall be married.

Isa 62:5 For as a young man marrieth a virgin, so shall thy sons marry thee: and as the bridegroom rejoiceth over the bride, so shall thy God rejoice over thee.

Rev 2:17 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.

Rev 3:12 Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name.

We already have those new names. The Lord allowed me to use a particular name on a bible study chat. Was Purehart. I was challenged many times about it but my answer was always that it was a goal, not a declaration.

I changed my name ( slightly ) when I was six years old. My birth name was Mona,and when my parents adopted me, at the age of eighteen months, they kept that name, but gave me a second name of Grace.

When I was six, I knew I didn't want people calling me Mona, with a long O...so I changed it to Monna, which is pronounced with a short O. Much , much nicer.

I've heard that in Hebrew culture, it was not uncommon to change a person's name to better suit the person - as the meaning of names was important to them (notice how often it is said that , "He named his son [such-n-such] because. . . .").

I've heard that it might be possible that the scholars who recorded the Old Testament historical books might have changed some people's names in the recording, and that was not an uncommon cultural practice to remember people by a different name than what was given them at birth.

As for Paul, though, I had understood that he had just started going by the Greco-Roman variation of his name since he was ministering so much to the Gentiles.

Nebs, I have heard that the Hebrews gave their children names that they hoped would be prophetic upon their lives. My daughter is Bethany, which means 'Daughter of God'. I can see this being true already and she is one month away from her 3rd birthday. She has such a love for Jesus and I am glad to have called her Bethany.
