Well the USA is part of the world........ Sorry - I realise that you were referring to which section of the forum the thread was meant to be in But just wanted to share a thought.. that for those of us outside the USA.. news about the USA *is* world news.... {um *ponders worthy timeout corner for me? lol} As for the topic of earthquakes - I am thinking perhaps the Pacific Ring of Fire is possibly 'grumpy' again.... i.e. some of the recent earthquakes I mean... I am hoping nobody got hurt in this one - Edited December 9, 2016 by just_abc

Here in Oklahoma we've been fracking for a long time and it is pretty much decided that it does cause 1.5 and below quakes at times, but those are not destructive at all..... however it wasn't until we started using really high pressure and volume injection wells to put the salt water and junk that comes up with most all oil back into the ground that the large quakes started.... Arkansas was using this high pressure and volume for some time and was having lots of Earth Quakes until they stopped the oil companies from using the injection wells in areas that had faults. Then all of a sudden Oklahoma started getting the quakes. And we started limiting the pressures and volumes in areas that we know have faults. The last large one we had 5.8 close to Cushing turned out to be a fault that we were not aware existed. They have completely shut down all injection wells in that area from what I read a couple of weeks ago. The quakes seem to come from putting the waste water back into the ground too fast for the underground formations to dispurse. We are learning and fixing things as we go. The west coast is a whole different beast though... Sink holes form in areas where the underground rock formations are made up of water soluble rocks.... underground aquifers actually dissolve the rock and sooner or later it falls into the open underground areas from the top. It tends to get worse when the areas are in a drought and the aquifers get lower from the surface.
