I have a basement. It comes in handy in the case of heavy storms or tornado's. 

Moving on, I don't get how two people would be having a discussion about career when upstairs on the top floors are criminals two cops would normally be handling as professionals in law enforcement. Rather than hiding in a basement having a chat.

A make believe situation would seem a cheap imitation (especially to them). Why not ask people for examples of their real life experiences? Then pick for yourself the one that fits your story line best and where you want to go with it. In my writing I get stumped most when I try to pretend or create too much. Borrow from the world filled with living examples all around you. In short, facts are stranger than fiction. Break a leg, my friend."
