Um....No. If You sue someone. You(the plaintiff) have to show how you have been damaged by the other party.  The burden of proof is on the person making the lawsuit(the  plaintiff)

Claiming damages isn't  the same as having the burden of proof.

Well, Trump would simply claim he never claimed what NBC assigned to him.   NBC's only defense is to prove that Trump DID say it.  They would have ante up their sources to prove that Trump did say what they claim he said, and that the liability for damages doesn't lie with them.   They would have the burden of proof at that point.

Trump would not only have to show that the statement was false.  But also that it damaged him in some way. As it it cost him money or something.  Anyway, I'm not going to take the time to debate something that most likely will not happen. If you don't believe me about how lawsuits work then go google it.  Have a good day.

This will please his supporters.  They would like to put a stop to any criticism of him at all.  Curtailing the 1st Amendment will be seen as expedient and forward-thinking.  If you cannot counter the opposition, just tie a gag around it's mouth.

Please don't put all of us Trump supporters into your own personal 'basket of deplorables', Cobalt.  I, for one, would never go along with the media being suppressed, even if they ARE disgusting.  Painting with a broad brush usually ends up making the painter look bad.

If NBC cannot produce a video or audio of the president saying what they claimed, then they have lost the case and are guilty of libel.

But also that it damaged him in some way.

If it is found that they have injured his reputation through libel, then he can claim damage.  And it doesn't have to money damages.

In a libel case the burden of proof is on the plaintiff,  they have to prove what was printed was a false and they have to prove that what was printed was reasonably known to be a lie to the one who printed it.

When he just makes empty threats and never follows up it is a sure sign he does not want the truth to come out

Really? It is a sure sign? Wow, I hope you are never on a jury!

The fact the POTUS is not suing is very telling actually.

He probably can't sue as a sitting president.

That's true depending on the allegation.  The allegation is that Trump said he wants an ten-fold increase in our nuclear arsenal.  Even James Mattis said that what NBC reported was false.

NBC is the one who needs to prove that claim by presenting the audio/video/written proof that the president didn't say it.  If not, they could be subject to a libel suit.   The president has not said he will sue, but that is really his only option if NBC purposely reported something false like that.

NBC has no broadcast licenses; only their affiliates have them so he can't really follow through on the threat of canceling NBC's "licenses."
