Does verse 23 mean don't brag about yourself, especially to try and look better than others?

Great question.

The principles in the book of Proverbs seem to be reflected across the broad spectrum of Scripture (both Old and New Testament). When you read Romans, you find Proverbs in there. When you study Revelation, you find Proverbs in there. Proverbs 12:23 is interesting - A prudent man concealeth knowledge: but the heart of fools proclaimeth foolishness.

It brings to mind 1 Corinthians 3:2 -  I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able. It seems that Paul, in his wisdom as a preacher, in that situation, found it necessary (prudent) to withhold the more "mature" doctrines (meat). When you meet a new believer in Christ, it may be prudent to withhold "meat" until the believer has time to be nourished on "milk". Milk for "babes" in Christ. So in this sense, A prudent man concealeth knowledge. It may be less than prudent (foolish) to give too much too soon.

One would speculate that "a fool" feels more than he thinks. In this sense, there is a greater tendency to spontaneously say as opposed to prudently proclaim. It brings to mind 1 James 1:19-20 - Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: why...? For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God. Consider James 3:2, 5 (NLT) - Indeed, we all make many mistakes. For if we could control our tongues, we would be perfect and could also control ourselves in every other way. ...Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. There is an element here in trying to look better than others or at least feeling the need to impress people so as to propagate what one might consider of value a form of human commendation. It brings to mind Galatians 1:10 - For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ. In this sense, it is foolish to place greater value on the commendation of man to that of God and so the heart of fools proclaimeth foolishness. Why do people fall into this trap? Here is a thought: Christians need to stick to the word of God and carefully consider (discriminately discern) what they feel is right in "light" of contemporary society when contemporary philosophy contradicts instruction from Scripture. The logic is simple and the Scriptures are clear. We do not need to rip verses from their context and commit interpretative fallacies when trying to uphold an agenda that we want the word of God to support. Here is Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers in relation to Proverbs 12:23 - A prudent man concealeth knowledge.—Till the right opportunity for bringing it forth presents itself; while “the heart of fools proclaimeth foolishness,” cannot help blurting out and displaying its ignorance and folly, which it mistakes for wisdomhttps://biblehub.com/commentaries/proverbs/12-23.htm.

Proverbs 26: 1-7

Don’t brag about tomorrowsince you don’t know what the day will bring.

Let someone else praise you, not your own mouth—a stranger, not your own lips.

A stone is heavy and sand is weighty, but the resentment caused by a fool is even heavier.

Anger is cruel, and wrath is like a flood, but jealousy is even more dangerous.

An open rebuke is better than hidden love!

Wounds from a sincere friend are better than many kisses from an enemy.

A person who is full refuses honey, but even bitter food tastes sweet to the hungry.

Revelation 14:6-7 parallel with Romans 10:13-14 and 1 Timothy 2:3-4 and Romans 1:16, 20-21

And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people, Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.

For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be savedHow then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?

For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our SaviourWho will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. ... For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuseBecause that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

Matthew 6:19-20 parallel with Revelation 14:13 (TLV)

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in or steal.

Then I heard a voice from heaven saying, “Write: How fortunate are the dead—those who die in the Lord from now on!” “Yes,” says the Ruach, “that they may rest from their labors, for their deeds follow them.”

Revelation 14:14-16 parallel with Daniel 7:13-14 (TLV)

Then I looked, and behold, there was a white cloud—and seated on the cloud was one like a son of man. He had a golden crown on His head and a sharp sickle in His hand. Then another angel came out of the Temple, crying out with a loud voice to the One seated on the cloud,

“Put in your sickle and reap,
for the hour to reap has come,
because the harvest of the earth is fully ripe.”

So the One seated on the cloud swung his sickle over the earth, and the earth was harvested.

“I was watching in the night visions. Behold, One like a Son of Man, coming with the clouds of heavenHe approached the Ancient of Days, and was brought into His presence. Dominion, glory and sovereignty were given to Him that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will never pass away, and His kingdom is one that will not be destroyed.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
