An outside term that Rabbinic writing used was "Notzrim" to describe the early Jewish believers. It is from the Hebrew for branch (netzer) a prophetic reference to the Messiah. The term Messianic Jew is a modern term. After the Bar Chochba revolt, the Jewish believers were viewed with contempt for not participating. They came up with degrading names for the Jewish believers.
