When punk rock succumbed to more demure new wave and alternative, Duran Duran came onto the MTV music scene. Good looking lads with strange hair having a great time. Hungry Like The Wolf, was the first song I recall them doing. Rio, followed after. This sort of music was in a new category for me and I liked it. A lot. I can't recall all the new wave and alternative bands I went to see perform during the 1980's.

More upbeat, even the heartbreaking tunes seemed to be. All the hits had videos on MTV or they never made FM radio song lists. The were dancey - boppy. Everyone got up from their seats and into the aisles doing the "pogo". More or less just jumping up and down in place! I wasn't a big fan of Duran Duran especially, there were other groups I favored. This song was interesting and also a big hit. Save a Prayer.

  1. Save a Prayer

You saw me standing by the wall corner of a main street
And the lights are flashing on your window sill
All alone ain't much fun so you're looking for the thrill
And you know just what it takes and where to go

Don't save a prayer for me now
Save it til the morning after
No don't say a prayer for me now
Save it til the morning after

Feel the breeze deep on the inside look you down into the well
If you can you'll see the world in all his fire
Take a chance like all dreamers can't find another way
You don't have to dream it all, just live a day

Don't say a prayer for me now
Save it 'til the morning after
No don't say a prayer for me now
Save it 'til the morning after
Save it 'til the morning after
Save it 'til the morning after

Pretty looking road I try to hold the rising floods that fill my skin
Don't ask me why I'll keep my promise melt the ice
And you wanted to dance so I asked you to dance
But fear is in your soul
Some people call it a one night stand but we can call it paradise

Don't say a prayer for me now
Save it til the morning after
No don't say a prayer for me now
Save it 'til the morning after
Save it 'til the morning after
Save it 'til the morning after
Save it 'til the morning after
Save it 'til the morning after (doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo)
Save a prayer 'til the morning after
Save a prayer 'til the morning after
Save a prayer 'til the morning after
Save a prayer 'til the morning after
Save a prayer 'til the morning after
Save a prayer 'til the morning after

I read an article in CCM Magazine (Christian Contemporary Music) with an interview with the British band, Simple Minds. Like the Irish group U2, some of the members in Simple Minds are confessing Christians. Not long after coming across this CCM article, they made an appearance in Fresno, CA. Me and a friend went to the show and really had a good time. Don't You (Forget About Me), was their big hit song. Towards the latter 80's, Simple Minds were still going strong while others were falling apart. I purchased a cassette, The Fighting Years and later bought the CD as well. They did a Peter Gabriel cover, Biko - complete with bagpipes. Terrific!

Other hits by Simple Minds.

Sanctify Yourself

Alive and Kicking

Promised You A Miracle

Waterfront

All The Things She Said

Belfast Child

Here's, Don't You (Forget About Me).

  1. Don't You (Forget About Me)

    Hey, hey, hey, hey
    Ooh woh

Won't you come see about me?
I'll be alone, dancing you know it baby

Tell me your troubles and doubts
Giving me everything inside and out and
Love's strange so real in the dark
Think of the tender things that we were working on

Slow change may pull us apart
When the light gets into your heart, baby

    Don't you, forget about me
    Don't, don't, don't, don't
    Don't you, forget about me

    Will you stand above me?
Look my way, never love me
Rain keeps falling, rain keeps falling
    Down, down, down

    Will you recognize me?
Call my name or walk on by
Rain keeps falling, rain keeps falling
    Down, down, down, down

    Hey, hey, hey, hey
    Ooh woh

    Don't you try and pretend
It's my feeling we'll win in the end
I won't harm you or touch your defenses
    Vanity and security

    Don't you forget about me
I'll be alone, dancing you know it baby
    Going to take you apart
I'll put us back together at heart, baby

    Don't you, forget about me
    Don't, don't, don't, don't
    Don't you, forget about me

    As you walk on by
    Will you call my name?
    As you walk on by
    Will you call my name?
    When you walk away

    Or will you walk away?
    Will you walk on by?
    Come on, call my name
    Will you call my name?

    I say
(Lala la la lala la la)
    Will you call my name?
    As you walk on by

I'm late to this thread, but one of my first LP's I owned was by Yes (90125). While not really progressive, it probably introduced me to that realm.

I saw Yes perform in latter 1980's and they were presenting The Big Generator Tour. 90125 had been released a few years previously. There are great tunes on both of these LPs. We have to understand that the lean during this time period still in the alternative and new wave era. Yes did their own type in this genre. Notable songs here were, It Can Happen, Holy Lamb, Hold On, and Aim High Shoot Low. Great tunes - great concert! When the opening to Roundabout kicked in, the crowd rose to their feet and cheered! Yes always puts on a wonderful show.

I was never a big concert attendee so I missed out on Yes, as I recall them coming through in support of Big Generator. Also another great album. Some of the older stuff like Roundabout and I've Seen All Good People are from I was pretty young so never made quite the same impression on me.

About a year ago while in a restaurant I heard this song that sounded somewhat familiar, mainly that the vocalist was Jon Anderson of Yes. I managed to track it down as being a collaboration between him and Vangelis: "Friends of Mr. Cairo". Very cool song.

Yeah, it was an incredible concert. It was the only opportunity I had for seeing Yes. Terrific.

I hate to break the news about posting videos in this section of the forums. We just can't do that.

It would be a nice boost to the topic of course and I'd love to do the same. We must post in the approved section reserved for them and they are permitted if they meet Worthy's qualifications. It's just a way for keeping those of questionable content from haphazardly being posted. No offense here. Vangelis is a great composer and musician. I have Opera Sauvage. Very good overall, but on a cassette.

It is with sadness that I have to announce the passing of the great British singer, Vera Lynn at the age of 103. She brought hope and inspiration to millions during some pretty tough times. In memory of her I post two great songs that I feel are fitting for our times and the occasion:

"We'll Meet Again"

We'll meet again,
Don't know where,
Don't know when
But I know we'll meet again some sunny day

Keep smiling through,
Just like you always do
'Til the blue skies drive the dark clouds far away

So will you please say "Hello"
To the folks that I know?
Tell them I won't be long
They'll be happy to know
That as you saw me go
I was singing this song

We'll meet again,
Don't know where,
Don't know when
But I know we'll meet again some sunny day

We'll meet again,
Don't know where
Don't know when.
But I know we'll meet again some sunny day.

Keep smiling through
Just like you always do,
'Til the blue skies drive the dark clouds far away

So will you please say "Hello"
To the folks that I know?
Tell them I won't be long.
They'll be happy to know
That as you saw me go,
I was singin' this song.

We'll meet again,
Don't know where,
Don't know when
But I know we'll meet again some sunny day

"White Cliffs Of Dover"

There'll be bluebirds over
The white cliffs of Dover,
Tomorrow, just you wait and see.

There'll be love and laughter
And peace ever after.
Tomorrow, when the world is free

The shepherd will tend his sheep.
The valley will bloom again.
And Jimmy will go to sleep
In his own little room again.

There'll be bluebirds over
The white cliffs of Dover,
Tomorrow, just you wait and see.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
