The Monterey Pop Festival of 1967, was an event to see and be seen. The Rolling Stones did not perform there, but member, Brian Jones was in attendance. He hung out with all the other musicians there and looked beautiful. The Animals also played a set there and Eric Burden composed a song of this experience.

Among those also performing.

The Mamas and the Papas

Janis Joplin and the Holding Company

The Byrds

 Otis Redding

Paul Butterfield Blues Band

The Jefferson Airplane

The Who

Ravi Shankar

Country Joe and the Fish

The Grateful Dead

The Jimi Hendrix Experience

Here's Monterey.

  1. Monterey

    The people came and listened
Some of them came and played
Others gave flowers away, yes they did
    Down in Monterey
    Down in Monterey
Young gods smiled upon the crowd
Their music being born of love
    Children danced night and day
    Religion was being born
    Down in Monterey

The Byrds and the Airplane did fly
Oh, Ravi Shankar's music made me cry
The Who exploded into fire and light
Hugh Masakela's music was black as night
The Grateful Dead blew everybody's mind
Jimi Hendrix baby, believe me, set the world on fire, yeah

His Majesty, Prince (Brian) Jones, smiled as he moved among the crowd
Ten thousand electric guitars were grooving real loud, yeah
You want to find the truth in life
    Don't pass music by
and you know I would not lie, no I would not lie,
    No, I would not lie
    Down in Monterey

Three days of understanding of moving with one another
Even the cops grooved with us
    Do you believe me, yeah?
    Down in Monterey
I think that maybe I'm dreaming
    Monterey
    Down in monterey
Did you hear what I said?

Grace Slick - Janis Joplin             Brian Jones                      Jimi Hendrix

I remember I liked that song.  It got a lot of FM air play.

Sky Pilot, the long version was a real favorite by The Animals. It was also one of their last big hits before Eric left the band and went solo. Spill the Wine, (Dig that girl) was his first.

After the Animals, Eric Burdon sang funk songs with War before hiring his vocal talents elsewhere. Eric Burdon and War had a good sound, but the American band War did pretty good without him when he left.  I don't know why he left.

There were some interpersonal problems within the group when the "swinging scene" of controversial celebrative substances became widely introduced among music circles in both the UK and United States. Eric mentioned half the group were still boozing it pretty heavily, while Eric and the others began experimenting with cannabis and hallucinogens. This was causing dissension between them and lines were drawn on either side. This eventually resulted with the breakup of a great band of talented guys in rocking rhythm & blues.

Eric Burdon & War was R & B roots and back to the very heart of where many British bands got their inspiration in the first place. Even groups such as The Beatles and The Rolling Stones had their beginnings in early American blues and Motown soul. Some of them like John Mayall Blues Breakers, and also Ten Years After, etc., remained true to the homage. Others developed their own sense of sound. The Brits loved American music and we Yanks loved the English rock. It was a great interchange was it not?

Eric Burdon also appeared on the PBS 60's Revival program with Herman's Hermits. Off the top of my head here on recall, these other artists and groups performed as well.

Petula Clark

Lulu

Procol Harum

Steppenwolf

John Sebastian - Lovin' Spoonful

Roger McGuinn - The Byrds

Barry McGuire - The New Christy Minstrels - (Eve of Destruction)

Gerry and the Pacemakers

Gordon Waller - Peter and Gordon

Question Mark ? and the Mysterians

Mitch Ryder - Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels

Paul Revere and the Raiders

I may have forgotten a few but these were tremendous musicians and artists from both sides of the Atlantic.

Eric Burdon sang House of the Rising Sun, of course. In the lyrics, he did some improvising about the Lord Jesus forgiving all his sins. Wow! Now that was making quite a statement there. Even then you can see Eric was giving thought to some spiritual matters. Seeing that Jim McGuinn and Barry McGuire are both born again Christians, perhaps the three of them got into bit of fellowshipping behind stage.

So here's Sky Pilot, by The Animals

  1. Sky Pilot

He blesses the boys as they stand in line
    The smell of gun grease
    and the bayonets they shine
He's there to help them all that he can
To make them feel wanted he's a good holy man
    Sky pilot,
    Sky pilot,
    How high can you fly?
You'll never, never, never reach the sky.

He smiles at the young soldiers
    Tells them it's all right
He knows of their fear in the forthcoming fight
Soon there'll be blood and many will die
Mothers and fathers back home they will cry
    Sky pilot,
    Sky pilot,
    How high can you fly?
You'll never, never, never reach the sky.

He mumbles a prayer and it ends with a smile
    The order is given
    They move down the line
But he'll stay behind and he'll meditate
But it won't stop the bleeding or ease the hate

As the young men move out into the battle zone
He feels good, with God you're never alone
He feels tired and he lays on his bed
Hopes the men will find courage
in the words that he said
    Sky pilot,
    Sky pilot,
    How high can you fly?
You'll never, never, never reach the sky.

You're soldiers of God, you must understand
The fate of your country is in your young hands
    May God give you strength
    Do your job real well
If it all was worth it
    Only time it will tell

    In the morning they return
    With tears in their eyes
The stench of death drifts up to the skies
A soldier so ill looks at the sky pilot
    Remembers the words
    "Thou shalt not kill."
    Sky pilot,
    Sky pilot,
    How high can you fly?
You'll never, never, never reach the sky.

  1. Spill the Wine

    I was once out strolling
    One very hot summer's day
When I thought I'd lay myself down to rest
In a big field of tall grass
I lay there in the sun
And felt it caressing my face
As I fell asleep and dreamed

I dreamed I was in a Hollywood movie
And that I was the star of the movie
    This really blew my mind
The fact that me, an overfed long-haired, leaping gnome
Should be the star of a Hollywood movie

    But there I was
I was taken to a place
The Hall of the Mountain King
I stood high up on a mountaintop
    Naked to the world
    In front of
    Every kind of girl
There was long ones, tall ones, short ones, brown ones
Black ones, round ones, big ones
    Crazy ones

    Out of the middle
    Came a lady
    She whispered in my ear
    Something crazy
    She said

Spill the wine, dig that girl
Spill the wine, take that pearl
Spill the wine, dig that girl
Spill the wine, take that pearl

I could feel hot flames of fire roaring at my back
    As she disappeared
    But soon she returned
In her hand was a bottle of wine
    In the other, a glass
She poured some of the wine from the bottle into the glass
And raised it to her lips
And just before she drunk it
    She said

Take the wine, take that pearl
Spill the wine, take that pearl
Take the wine, take that pearl
Spill the wine, take that pearl
    Take that pearl, yeah!
    It's all good
Oh, you got to do it
Spill that wine, spill that wine

Spill the wine, spill the wine, spill the wine, spill the wine, spill the wine
    Take that pearl

I just enjoyed one of those cheesy 60's beach movies, but this one was sans Frankie and Annette. There was one previous to this also both of which were aired on the Turner Classics Movies channel. Of course, with Avalon and Funicello. This was after the Mouseketeers and before the Skippy peanut butter commercials.

Anyway, in this beach movie several popular rock and pop bands appeared, as they are sometimes known to do. At the nightclub where all the surf kids do their go-go dancing, out steps Eric Burdon and the Animals. Eric and the boys sang this popular Animals song, We Gotta Get Out of This Place.

  1. We Gotta Get Out of This Place

In this dirty old part of the city
Where the sun refused to shine
People tell me there ain't no use in tryin'

Now my girl you're so young and pretty
And one thing I know is true
You'll be dead before your time is due, I know

Watch my daddy in bed a-dyin'
Watched his hair been turnin' grey
He's been workin' and slavin' his life away
    Oh yes I know it

(Yeah!) He's been workin' so hard
(Yeah!) I've been workin' too, baby
    (Yeah!) Every night and day
    (Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!)

We gotta get out of this place
If it's the last thing we ever do
We gotta get out of this place
'cause girl, there's a better life for me and you

Now my girl you're so young and pretty
And one thing I know is true, yeah
You'll be dead before your time is due, I know it

Watch my daddy in bed a-dyin'
Watched his hair been turnin' grey, yeah
He's been workin' and slavin' his life away
I know he's been workin' so hard

(Yeah!) I've been workin' too, baby
    (Yeah!) Every day baby
    (Yeah!) Whoa!
    (Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!)

We gotta get out of this place
If it's the last thing we ever do
We gotta get out of this place
Girl, there's a better life for me and you
Somewhere baby, somehow I know it

We gotta get out of this place
If it's the last thing we ever do
We gotta get out of this place
Girl, there's a better life for me and you
    Believe me baby
    I know it baby
    You know it too

Two English folk singing duos in the 1960's that were prominent on the Top 40 hit charts were Chad and Jeremy, plus Peter and Gordon. They remained the beautiful balladeers that they started out in the industry. This was proving to be rather difficult when pop, soul, and rock 'n' roll dominated the airwaves, but these guys hung in there with quality music. Peter Asher was Jane Asher's brother.

Jane was a long time girlfriend of Paul McCartney. She was a lovely pretty girl and an actress on the British movie screen. I think a lot of people were disappointed they never wed, instead marrying American photographer, Linda Eastman. (Eastman/Kodak) John and Paul wrote this song, recorded it, and then gave it over to Peter and Gordon for making a hit. It surely was for them. Here's, A World Without Love.

  1. A World Without Love

I don't care what they say
I won't stay in a world without love

    Please lock me away
    And don't allow the day
Here inside, where I hide with my loneliness
    I don't care what they say, I won't stay
    In a world without love

    Birds sing out of tune
And rain clouds hide the moon
I'm ok, here I stay with my loneliness
    I don't care what they say, I won't stay
    In a world without love

So I wait, and in a while
I will see my true love smile
She may come, I know not when
    When she does, I'll lose
    So baby until then

    Lock me away
    And don't allow the day
Here inside, where I hide with my loneliness
    I don't care what they say, I won't stay
    In a world without love

    (Please lock me away)
    (And don't allow the day)
(Here inside, where I hide with my loneliness)
    I don't care what they say, I won't stay
    In a world without love

So I wait, and in a while
I will see my true love smile
She may come, I know not when
    When she does, I'll lose
    So baby until then

    Lock me away
    And don't allow the day
Here inside, where I hide with my loneliness
    I don't care what they say, I won't stay
    In a world without love

    I don't care what they say, I won't stay
In a world without love (forget him)

And then there is Chad and Jeremy, as the other famed British folk duo who were equally popular in the UK and USA. Acoustic guitars and charming ballads with these minstrels of song. I recall they even did a guest appearance on the Patty Duke Show on one episode. Some of their most cherished hits included, Everyone's Gone to the Moon, Yesterday's Gone, A Summer Song, and Willow Weep For Me. Simply wonderful!

  1. A Summer Song

Trees swayin' in the summer breeze
    Showin' off their silver leaves
    As we walked by

Soft kisses on a summer's day
    Laughing all our cares away
    Just you and I

Sweet sleepy warmth of summer nights
    Gazing at the distant lights
    In the starry sky

They say that all good things must end some day
    Autumn leaves must fall
But don't you know that it hurts me so
    To say goodbye to you
Wish you didn't have to go
    No, no, no, no

    And when the rain
    Beats against my windowpane
I'll think of summer days again
    And dream of you

They say that all good things must end some day
    Autumn leaves must fall
But don't you know that it hurts me so
    To say goodbye to you
Wish you didn't have to go
    No no no no

    And when the rain
    Beats against my windowpane
I'll think of summer days again
    And dream of you
    And dream of you

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
