[sarcasm]You're right, Augustine, Ireneaus, and Justin Martyr NEVER taught the idea of eternal security[/sarcasm]

All of them taught that those who endure are saved and took the wording from the Bible. You saw my response on scripture and realized you couldn't argue back, so you decided to appeal to the church fathers. Unlucky for you I'm a church history major.

So go ahead, continue this debate :noidea:

I have given proof that the teaching of the early church was not OSAS.

Nobody has yet to given any proof that OSAS was the teaching of the original church.

Now what needs to be explained to me is this:

If the Bible teaches OSAS, and the disciples of the apostles didn't teach OSAS, when did conditional security get introduced into the church?

I showed you how you falsely misread what they said :whistling:

It was a doctrne taught, it was assumed, true believers, those of true faith, can't fall away.

Explain this to me:

Tertullian (140 to 230 AD),

"Some people act as though God were under an obligation to bestow even on the unworthy His intended gift...For do not many afterwards fall out of grace? Is not this gift taken away from many?"

They fell out of grace and had the gift taken away and yet you can try to claim that this teaches one can't fall away? :whistling:

Also, pay attention, none of the quotes from Clement, Polycarp, or Irenaeus do not teach a limited salvation. The closest quote that comes to it would be from Irenaeus yet he is quoting partly from a scripture, and "shut out from his kingdom" meant the works of His kingdom and the power of His Kingdom. THe biggest theme among the early church was that they were God's kingdom, His representation on earth. By sinning wilfully and not repenting, we cast ourselves away from His earthly kingdom, we were cast away from the church. THis is what Paul instructed, so that the person may die by Satan's hand, but his soul still belongs to God (this in my other post).

The simple fact is, not only did you mis interpret scripture, but you're mis reading what the early church fathers said :whistling:

Tell ya what, when you explain this one to me I'll explain Tertullian...who later joined a cult :emot-dance:

I agree with the consensus here that it matters not what the early church taught. What matters is what God's word SAYS... to this day.

This would transcend to all teachings and doctrines, not just the OSAS debate.

The early church fathers didn't drive automobiles, but I still find it a useful means of transportation. :whistling:

How is that a valid reply to anything I posted?

There is a logical fallacy in this argument that assumes that if something is a more recent discovery it is not true. This is logically fallacious. Man doctrines have developed over time as the contents of scripture have been fleshed out.

So the Apostles were idiots? :whistling:

I believe in the final authority of the Scriptures, but to assume that we can just open the Bible without 2,000 years of presuppositions, language barriers, and theological corruption is rather pretentious.

While it's true that old does not always mean true, who has a greater probability to be right? The earliest fathers taught by the Apostles, or us?

True, doctrine did develop over time, but not in opposition of the fathers. They did not preach against the Trinity or the two natures of Christ, they just did not have it all worked out. The same cannot be said for Eternal Security as the Christian world knows it today.

History is important - are we to assume that the truth was immediately and completely lost, only to be rediscoverd by Augustine and Calvin?

Because no quotes have been given that indicate unconditional security and I have given some that indicate conditional security.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
