Who is mystery Babylon?

Often a topic or a sub-topic that is brought up.  When I thought of this not long ago an obelisk popped in my head.  These things are everywhere the largest being in Washington D.C.  Some notable obelisks are in the Vatican, Cleopatra's Needle in London, The Luxor Obelisk in Paris, Sanssouci Park in Germany, Hyde Park Obelisk in Australia.

Pretty much every western nation has an obelisk or baal's shaft in their nations and cities.    Maybe Mystery Babylon is not a place but an allegiance among the nations.  The question is that allegiance pointing in the right direction?

Exosus 23:24 You shall not bow down to their gods, nor serve them, nor do according to their works; but you shall utterly overthrow them and completely break down their sacred pillars.

Rev 18:4 And I heard another voice from heaven saying, “Come out of her, my people, lest you share in her sins, and lest you receive of her plagues.

Isn't the great whore, Mystery Babylon (Revelation 17:5), the great city whose economic policies, the rest of the world's governments emulate (Revelation 17:18), and whose policies are responsible for all murders committed throughout the earth (Revelation 18:24)?

Rev 11:8  and their dead bodies will lie in the street of the great city that symbolically is called Sodom and Egypt, where their Lord was crucified.
9  For three and a half days some from the peoples and tribes and languages and nations will gaze at their dead bodies and refuse to let them be placed in a tomb,

So Jerusalem is called Sodom (abominations) and Egypt (false religion, idolatry)

One of the main themes of the Rev. is the restoration of Jerusalem to Israel.

As long as the people of Israel reject the Jesus and the gospel kingdom they will be considered Sodom and Egypt.

Revelation chapter 11 is that about Judah up to the time of Jesus' ministry?

The temple and the people were measured in 37 AD approx. when they rejected the new covenant and started killing Christians.

The 2 witnesses wear sack cloth in mourning for Jerusalem while they are outside of the city.

The text shows them restored to Jerusalem.

37 AD - 1967, Then the short time after they are restored to Jerusalem.

The two witnesses being the Law and the Prophets?

Yes,

The 2 witnesses are the Law and the Prophets.

The Law and the Prophets are possessions of the people of Israel. The life giving knowledge of God is given through Israel and then to the world.

The 2 witnesses is the story of the Law and Prophets in the possession of the flesh unbelieving broken branches, centering on the time that happens after the 70 AD destruction.

----

You see that the biggest question for the people of Israel after the 70 AD destruction and scattering was, "How long until Jerusalem is restored to Israel?".

The Rev answers this question multiple times in different ways.

The answer is not given as a specific time, such as 1900 years, but is answered in the imagery and symbolism. Such as 3 1/2 times, 42 months, or 1260 days. They are not literal months or days, but are images of the 70 AD through the restoration of Jerusalem time period.

I'm going to agree with you if,

Your Babylon is Jerusalem.

------

But I am interested in how you came to your conclusion.

I don't see the word Babylon used until Rev 14:8.

Why do you think that the 6th trumpet is applied to Babylon? Or is it Jerusalem?

I am not 100% who mystery Babylon is.  That is the reason for this thread.  I have heard the whole world system, USA, RCC, New York City, the UN, etc.

Now for the timing of her destruction I get that from Revelation.

Using the word Woe and also Alas which are the same word Origin.

As you probably know there are 3 woes in Revelation.

Many times Revelation is specific and says the 1st woe has past or the 2nd woe has past but other times The woes are called out and can be counted.

Example woe, woe, woe or 3 woes.  I use these markers where to place everything on the time line.  I find the story of Revelation jumps around and is also told again and again using different symbology.

As for where to place the destruction of Babylon I submit that happens in the 2nd woe or the 2nd Alas.  Same word in the text just translated differently.  See Rev 18:10, 18:16 and 18:19 as examples of the 2nd woe.

Rev 18:10 Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come.

Rev 18:16 And saying, Alas, alas, that great city, that was clothed in fine linen, and purple, and scarlet, and decked with gold, and precious stones, and pearls!

Rev 18:19 And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas, that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate.

In addition from Rev 14 we see Babylon falls just before God's wrath which is at the 3rd Woe placing the destruction of Babylon in the 2nd Woe.

Babylon the great is the sinful world. There is no country, or political system, that is responsible for all that have been killed on the earth

Rev 24:18 In her was found the blood of prophets and of God’s holy people,
of all who have been slaughtered on the earth.”

This verse brings us all the way back to Cain, It can only be the sinful world, and God wants us to come out of her

I have read all your posts, and you have the right intuition, just not the understanding in full

How is that a city or a religion, or a country. People always over look this verse. I would be happy to change my view if someone would explain that verse for me

There is no MYSTERY BABYLON for starters, because the word Mystery should be a header like this below, followed by "Three Descriptors".

MYSTERY

1.) Babylon the Great

2.) Mother of Harlots

3.) Abominations of all the earth

In verse 7 the angel says I will tell you the MYSTERY of the Woman and the Beast she rides. So, its not been a mystery for 2000 years, the angel says he is about to explain this MYSTERY unto us in Rev. 17 (The Harlot) and 18 (Babylon/Gov. Beast she rides).

The Harlots of old had a headband they wore that described who they were unto their clients. Here, this Harlot has been tagged with "THREE NAMES" that describe who she is unto us.

1.) The Harlot is associated with Babylon the Great city. (a world renown False Religion center)

2.) The Harlot is the mother of all harlotry in that serving false gods led men astray to start with.(False Religion was the beginning of mans downfall)

3.) The Harlot False Religions are of course an Abomination unto God. (God is a jealous God, serving any god but God is an abomination.)

So, the three descriptors describe unto who the Harlot is. All False Religion of ALL TIME. But she also RIDES a Beast (Babylon/Government oppressors). Thus False Religion is co-mingled with False Governance a la Babylon and False Religion down through the ages until Rev. 17:16 where the Gov. Beast (Kings in league with the Beast) decides to wipe out the Harlot False Religions, because the Beast/Man or Anti-Christ desires to be worshiped himself as god, thus there is no place for Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism etc. in his end time kingdom.

So, in essence, the Harlot False Religions is killed off in Rev. 17, and then we are shown Babylon (the whole world) being Judged in Rev. 18, this happens over the 42 months of God's Wrath. Babylon is not a city, it is a Spiritual entity.

It is Satan's Dark Kingdom on this earth. Babel means CONFUSION, and there is no greater description of Confusion than an entity (Satan) so deceiving mankind that they go to war against their own Creator.

Rev. 16:19 explains who Babylon is, it says after Jesus lands on the holy mount. tat splits into, and the Nations FALL  God calls those that were defeated, Babylon the Great which received the Wrath of God.

So, all we have to do is go back to the 6th vial to see who were defeated at the 7th vial, in order to find out who Babylon the Great was.

Rev. 16:14 For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.

So, who does God give His wrath to in Rev. 16:19 and then call them Babylon the Great? Its the Kings of the WHOLE WORLD.

God judges the WHOLE WORLD, not ONE CITY.

So, you are on the right track. You just need to put it al together.

The RCC is not the Harlot, Islam is not the Harlot in full either.

ALL FALSE RELIGION = The Harlot.

The Whole World = Babylon.

The Harlot (False Religion) RIDES the Beasts (Whole World under Satan's Rule).

Yes, the Revelation repeats the same general time line over and over.

It is centered on the time from 70 AD until Israel is restored to Jerusalem.

The beast nation that persecutes Israel during that time is shown as primarily Rome.

The 2nd woe is the 6th trumpet.

The armies from across the Euphrates River move to attack Jerusalem.

The woman is Israel/Jerusalem. The beast is the nation of Rome.

Understanding which one it is talking about helps to clarify the time line..

I am not sold on a preterist view but none the less it is interesting and I will continue to research all views.

Thank you,

Thank you,

Since I have many events in the time line placed after 70 AD, also happening at our present time, and future from our present time, I cannot be a preterist.

As I have stated many times before, the answers are in the middle, between preterism and futurism.

It is not all past, but it is not all future either.

Just some attributes of Babylon in the future and her offspring.

Psalm 137:7 Remember, O LORD, the children of Edom in the day of Jerusalem; who said, Rase it, rase it, even to the foundation thereof. 8 O daughter of Babylon, who art to be destroyed; happy shall he be, that rewardeth thee as thou hast served us.

Isaiah 13:19 And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, the beauty of the Chaldees' excellency, shall be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah.

Isaiah 14:4 That thou shalt take up this proverb against the king of Babylon, and say, How hath the oppressor ceased! the golden city ceased!

Isaiah 14:8 Yea, the fir trees rejoice at thee, and the cedars of Lebanon, saying, Since thou art laid down, no feller is come up against us.

Why are the fir trees rejoicing?  No more Xmas Trees?

Isaiah 21:9 And, behold, here cometh a chariot of men, with a couple of horsemen. And he answered and said, Babylon is fallen, is fallen; and all the graven images of her gods he hath broken unto the ground.:

Isaiah 47:1 Come down, and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon, sit on the ground: there is no throne, O daughter of the Chaldeans: for thou shalt no more be called tender and delicate. 2 Take the millstones, and grind meal: uncover thy locks, make bare the leg, uncover the thigh, pass over the rivers. 3 Thy nakedness shall be uncovered, yea, thy shame shall be seen: I will take vengeance, and I will not meet thee as a man. 4 As for our redeemer, the LORD of hosts is his name, the Holy One of Israel. 5 Sit thou silent, and get thee into darkness, O daughter of the Chaldeans: for thou shalt no more be called, The lady of kingdoms. 6 I was wroth with my people, I have polluted mine inheritance, and given them into thine hand: thou didst shew them no mercy; upon the ancient hast thou very heavily laid thy yoke. 7 And thou saidst, I shall be a lady for ever: so that thou didst not lay these things to thy heart, neither didst remember the latter end of it. 8 Therefore hear now this, thou that art given to pleasures, that dwellest carelessly, that sayest in thine heart, I am, and none else beside me; I shall not sit as a widow, neither shall I know the loss of children: 9 But these two things shall come to thee in a moment in one day, the loss of children, and widowhood: they shall come upon thee in their perfection for the multitude of thy sorceries, and for the great abundance of thine enchantments. 10 For thou hast trusted in thy wickedness: thou hast said, None seeth me. Thy wisdom and thy knowledge, it hath perverted thee; and thou hast said in thine heart, I am, and none else beside me. 11 Therefore shall evil come upon thee; thou shalt not know from whence it riseth: and mischief shall fall upon thee; thou shalt not be able to put it off: and desolation shall come upon thee suddenly, which thou shalt not know. 12 Stand now with thine enchantments, and with the multitude of thy sorceries, wherein thou hast laboured from thy youth; if so be thou shalt be able to profit, if so be thou mayest prevail. 13 Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels. Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save thee from these things that shall come upon thee. 14 Behold, they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame: there shall not be a coal to warm at, nor fire to sit before it. 15 Thus shall they be unto thee with whom thou hast laboured, even thy merchants, from thy youth: they shall wander every one to his quarter; none shall save thee.

Isaiah 48:14 All ye, assemble yourselves, and hear; which among them hath declared these things? The LORD hath loved him: he will do his pleasure on Babylon, and his arm shall be on the Chaldeans.

Isaiah 48:20 Go ye forth of Babylon, flee ye from the Chaldeans, with a voice of singing declare ye, tell this, utter it even to the end of the earth; say ye, The LORD hath redeemed his servant Jacob.

More Old Testament Babylon this time from Jeremiah.

Jeremiah 50:1 The word that the LORD spake against Babylon and against the land of the Chaldeans by Jeremiah the prophet. 2 Declare ye among the nations, and publish, and set up a standard; publish, and conceal not: say, Babylon is taken, Bel is confounded, Merodach is broken in pieces; her idols are confounded, her images are broken in pieces. 3 For out of the north there cometh up a nation against her, which shall make her land desolate, and none shall dwell therein: they shall remove, they shall depart, both man and beast. 4 In those days, and in that time, saith the LORD, the children of Israel shall come, they and the children of Judah together, going and weeping: they shall go, and seek the LORD their God. 5 They shall ask the way to Zion with their faces thitherward, saying, Come, and let us join ourselves to the LORD in a perpetual covenant that shall not be forgotten. 6 My people hath been lost sheep: their shepherds have caused them to go astray, they have turned them away on the mountains: they have gone from mountain to hill, they have forgotten their restingplace. 7 All that found them have devoured them: and their adversaries said, We offend not, because they have sinned against the LORD, the habitation of justice, even the LORD, the hope of their fathers. 8 Remove out of the midst of Babylon, and go forth out of the land of the Chaldeans, and be as the he goats before the flocks. 9 For, lo, I will raise and cause to come up against Babylon an assembly of great nations from the north country: and they shall set themselves in array against her; from thence she shall be taken: their arrows shall be as of a mighty expert man; none shall return in vain. 10 And Chaldea shall be a spoil: all that spoil her shall be satisfied, saith the LORD. 11 Because ye were glad, because ye rejoiced, O ye destroyers of mine heritage, because ye are grown fat as the heifer at grass, and bellow as bulls; 12 Your mother shall be sore confounded; she that bare you shall be ashamed: behold, the hindermost of the nations shall be a wilderness, a dry land, and a desert. 13 Because of the wrath of the LORD it shall not be inhabited, but it shall be wholly desolate: every one that goeth by Babylon shall be astonished, and hiss at all her plagues. 14 Put yourselves in array against Babylon round about: all ye that bend the bow, shoot at her, spare no arrows: for she hath sinned against the LORD. 15 Shout against her round about: she hath given her hand: her foundations are fallen, her walls are thrown down: for it is the vengeance of the LORD: take vengeance upon her; as she hath done, do unto her. 16 Cut off the sower from Babylon, and him that handleth the sickle in the time of harvest: for fear of the oppressing sword they shall turn every one to his people, and they shall flee every one to his own land. 17 Israel is a scattered sheep; the lions have driven him away: first the king of Assyria hath devoured him; and last this Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon hath broken his bones. 18 Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will punish the king of Babylon and his land, as I have punished the king of Assyria. 19 And I will bring Israel again to his habitation, and he shall feed on Carmel and Bashan, and his soul shall be satisfied upon mount Ephraim and Gilead. 20 In those days, and in that time, saith the LORD, the iniquity of Israel shall be sought for, and there shall be none; and the sins of Judah, and they shall not be found: for I will pardon them whom I reserve. 21 Go up against the land of Merathaim, even against it, and against the inhabitants of Pekod: waste and utterly destroy after them, saith the LORD, and do according to all that I have commanded thee. 22 A sound of battle is in the land, and of great destruction. 23 How is the hammer of the whole earth cut asunder and broken! how is Babylon become a desolation among the nations! 24 I have laid a snare for thee, and thou art also taken, O Babylon, and thou wast not aware: thou art found, and also caught, because thou hast striven against the LORD. 25 The LORD hath opened his armoury, and hath brought forth the weapons of his indignation: for this is the work of the Lord GOD of hosts in the land of the Chaldeans. 26 Come against her from the utmost border, open her storehouses: cast her up as heaps, and destroy her utterly: let nothing of her be left. 27 Slay all her bullocks; let them go down to the slaughter: woe unto them! for their day is come, the time of their visitation. 28 The voice of them that flee and escape out of the land of Babylon, to declare in Zion the vengeance of the LORD our God, the vengeance of his temple. 29 Call together the archers against Babylon: all ye that bend the bow, camp against it round about; let none thereof escape: recompense her according to her work; according to all that she hath done, do unto her: for she hath been proud against the LORD, against the Holy One of Israel. 30 Therefore shall her young men fall in the streets, and all her men of war shall be cut off in that day, saith the LORD. 31 Behold, I am against thee, O thou most proud, saith the Lord GOD of hosts: for thy day is come, the time that I will visit thee. 32 And the most proud shall stumble and fall, and none shall raise him up: and I will kindle a fire in his cities, and it shall devour all round about him. 33 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; The children of Israel and the children of Judah were oppressed together: and all that took them captives held them fast; they refused to let them go. 34 Their Redeemer is strong; the LORD of hosts is his name: he shall throughly plead their cause, that he may give rest to the land, and disquiet the inhabitants of Babylon. 35 A sword is upon the Chaldeans, saith the LORD, and upon the inhabitants of Babylon, and upon her princes, and upon her wise men. 36 A sword is upon the liars; and they shall dote: a sword is upon her mighty men; and they shall be dismayed. 37 A sword is upon their horses, and upon their chariots, and upon all the mingled people that are in the midst of her; and they shall become as women: a sword is upon her treasures; and they shall be robbed. 38 A drought is upon her waters; and they shall be dried up: for it is the land of graven images, and they are mad upon their idols. 39 Therefore the wild beasts of the desert with the wild beasts of the islands shall dwell there, and the owls shall dwell therein: and it shall be no more inhabited for ever; neither shall it be dwelt in from generation to generation. 40 As God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbour cities thereof, saith the LORD; so shall no man abide there, neither shall any son of man dwell therein. 41 Behold, a people shall come from the north, and a great nation, and many kings shall be raised up from the coasts of the earth. 42 They shall hold the bow and the lance: they are cruel, and will not shew mercy: their voice shall roar like the sea, and they shall ride upon horses, every one put in array, like a man to the battle, against thee, O daughter of Babylon. 43 The king of Babylon hath heard the report of them, and his hands waxed feeble: anguish took hold of him, and pangs as of a woman in travail. 44 Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the swelling of Jordan unto the habitation of the strong: but I will make them suddenly run away from her: and who is a chosen man, that I may appoint over her? for who is like me? and who will appoint me the time? and who is that shepherd that will stand before me? 45 Therefore hear ye the counsel of the LORD, that he hath taken against Babylon; and his purposes, that he hath purposed against the land of the Chaldeans: Surely the least of the flock shall draw them out: surely he shall make their habitation desolate with them. 46 At the noise of the taking of Babylon the earth is moved, and the cry is heard among the nations.

Why do you believe that this is future?

Wasn't it fulfilled already when Babylon fell?
