My mother passed away last week and I just received a card from people from a business where I work with money in it. I know people include money with birthday and anniversary cards and the like. What I would like to know is is it usual or normal to include money with sympathy cards?

This is very common where I work. We pass a card around and if anyone wants to contribute they put in whatever they feel. We also do that when someone retires.

I think it is a kind gesture to give money to those who have lost someone.

They did the same for me when my dad died.

My heart felt sympathy for the loss of your mother. Even as a Christian, our loss is still painful and it hurts and we grieve. But yes, it is common to get money at a death, to help some financially. Today our Father called home a brother in Christ at our church. I pondered what would be an appropriate thing to do; card, flowers, money etc.

I felt lead to make an "in memory of" donation to The Gideons International, to put Bibles in someone's needing hand. Any which way someone shows love and compassion toward someone else; is a blessing and so appreciated, especially in a time of mourning, pain and grief. God bless you.

That is what most everyone in my area asks, that people make a donation in memory of…..to a specific church, foundation or to a place of their own choice in lieu of flowers.
Yes, we may be Christian, but we are human and our family members are special to us. We grieve but not without hope that we will see them one day very soon.

Been down this road a few times. There are always extra expenses incurred during funerals (food, household supplies) depending on how many people visit you. I would accept the money graciously, and express thanks to the people who gave it.

I would say it's not unusual, my friend.
