I was wondering what people would have to say on this subject. There are those that believe that when we die our soul rests until the day of ressurection. This is what I have heard people call soul sleep. They are able to back this up with scripture. But then there are others that say that when you die your soul goes straight to heaven, and they to, can back this up with scripture. I was just wanting to know what your opinions are on this subject.

Those who die do not live again in any other way until Christ brings them back to life. This is what the resurrection of the dead is and means.

Joh 11

11 These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth (Is Dead); but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.

Ac 13

36 For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell on sleep (died), and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption:

1Co 15

51 Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep (die), but we shall all be changed,

1Th 4

14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep (are Dead) in Jesus will God bring with him.

Grace to you Raven,

I would urge you as a believer to seek these answers right from the Throne. That is why we have a personal relationship with our Risen Lord. :24:

As far a Soul Sleep? This Ministry does not support it. Here is a sentence from our Statement of Faith concerning this matter.

We believe that immediately upon death, the soul of the believer is absent from the body, and present with the Lord.

We believe in the full promise of God by Faith.

Scripture says ask, seek, knock and the door will be opened unto you. This applies to Salvation. Yet I believe it also applies to Wisdom. I would urge you to ask, seek, and knock. The Lord is Faithful to His Word. Pray first then seek out these answers.

Peace,

Dave

Worthy Servant

There was a lengthy discussion on this not too long ago.

As one who does believe the spirit rests, in the care of God, until the return of our Lord and the resurrection of the dead I do not feel this is in violation of the statement of faith on Worthy Boards:

The Raven,

Curious as to how you picked your name........

Philippians 1:21-23, "For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. But if I live in the flesh, this is the fruit of my labor: yet what I shall choose I cannot tell. For I am in a strait between the two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better."

II Corinthians 5:1-9 "Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. 2 Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling, 3 because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked. 4 For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. 5 Now it is God who has made us for this very purpose and has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come. 6 Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. 7 We live by faith, not by sight. 8 We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord. 9 So we make it our goal to please him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it.

Revelation 6:9-11 there are martyrs (disembodied individuals) under the altar in heaven that are crying out to God asking Him how long He will wait to avenge them of their enemies. How were they existing apart from a body and before the resurrection?

What about Moses

Thank you all for your replies. I have to admit that I have been a little confusd with this as I have found scripture that would match up with soul sleep, as well as scripture that does not.

As for how I got the name Raven. It is a nick name I have had for some time. Most of the time I would mainly wear black clothes (black pants, black jeans, black t-shirt, black shirt). As well as that my hair is what is called jet black, another name for that would be raven. The name has sort of stuck, so with it being a name that I am used to, I decided to use it online. As well as that, before I felt drawn to the Lord, a favourite poem of mine was "The Raven" by Edgar Allen Poe. So with the poem and with it actually being a nick name that I have it is an easy name for me to remember, so that is why I use it on the net.

Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord: For we walk by faith, not by sight: We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.

And take Jesus' story of lazarus and the poor man! (Luke 16:19-31)

Trinity, just to quote a few verses cannot "prove" the doctrine that those that died are awake in heaven. I would be happy to enter into a discussion with you on each verse in Soapbox Debate.

Of the verses you mentioned NONE say the person in question went to heaven. They speak of being with the Lord. And when will that be?

For example, explain these verses:

Job 7:21 And why dost thou not pardon my transgression, and take away mine iniquity? for now shall I sleep in the dust; and thou shalt seek me in the morning, but I shall not be.

Psa 6:5 For in death there is no remembrance of thee: in the grave who shall give thee thanks?

Psa 13:3 Consider and hear me, O LORD my God: lighten mine eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death;

Psa 17:15 As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness.

Psa 71:20 Thou, which hast shewed me great and sore troubles, shalt quicken me again, and shalt bring me up again from the depths of the earth.

Psa 115:17 The dead praise not the LORD, neither any that go down into silence.

Psa 146:2 While I live will I praise the LORD: I will sing praises unto my God while I have any being.

Dan 12:2 And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.

1Co 15:20 But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are asleep. (NASB)

Eph 5:14 Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.

1Th 4:13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.

1Th 4:14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.

1Th 4:15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.

1Th 5:10 Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.

2Pe 3:4 And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.

Both sides of the coin are going to have supporting scriptures to back up why they believe as they do. My advise is to keep searching until you comfortable with one or the other.

1pe 3:18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:

1pe 3:19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;

Jesus' body, slept.

His Spirit and soul, were still alive.

Heb 4:11 Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.

the "rest"---our Spirits and souls---take up---is the SABBATH REST OF THE LORD. we do not sleep, like the body/flesh does.

Heb 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Heb 4:13 Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

Heb 4:14 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.

1th 5:22 Abstain from all appearance of evil.

1th 5:23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

1th 5:24 Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.

there is no doubt, the bible gives evidence that the body---is separated from Body and Soul.

Just as our Lord, was an example.

Mark, I realize I am fighting an uphill battle and nothing I say will convince you but just to touch on the verses you quoted:

1pe 3:18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:

1pe 3:19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;

In verse 18 Jesus had already risen from the dead. He was put to death and THEN quicken by the Spirit

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
