I would think one has to be a believer in Jesus Christ before getting a tattoo like that though.  Peer pressuring someone that is not a believer into getting one would seem like missing the mark when they should be witnessing to that nurse and let their examples lead them to want to get a Christian tattoo AFTER salvation, but accept the newly saved believer without one.

@ChristB4us I think it's likely that the term is being used more as a figure of speech.

That being said, among demographics such as nurses, it seems that the expectation and desire to be tattooed is very strong indeed, in many cases.

In the case of this rather conservative minded nurse, quoted, the strong desire to have gotten tattooed seems to have come from herself rather than from pressure from others.

I saw an account of a Hollywood director wanting to film a beach scene from the 1950s, when it was less widespread among young women, and yet for the beach scene he could not find enough young women as film extras who were not tattooed.

Today it would be hard to argue that it's not lady-like and it's undoubted that so many Christian women as well as men go confidently to the tattoo parlor, often for something faith-based in design.

There is that, but I would also remind a brother or sister:

1 Corinthians 6:12 All things are lawful for me,

but all things are not helpful.

All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought

under the power of any.

1 Corinthians 10:23 All things are lawful for me,

but not all things are helpful; all things are lawful for me,

but not all things edify.

"I will not be brought under the power of any".

What many seem to lack an understanding of is that like

ourselves, there is a spiritual side of everything, and spirits

are territorial. In other words, if you go anywhere people

"hang out", you will find certain spirits, whether a bar or

a barbershop. No different than going into a tattoo parlor.

Spiritual warfare comes before effective witnessing. People

go out thinking they can "share their faith", and have never

prayed up into the full armor of God, and they get chewed up

on the streets. I have seen someone who you would least expect,

drugged out in the French Quarter (in NOLA), and humiliate

a brother,  with a superior knowledge of scripture.

Devils know the word!

Now before you read something into that statement, I did not say you have to have superior knowledge of scripture to go out and witness. I said you better be prayed up into the full armor of God, and you can trust that the Lord will give you the words to speak, as promised.

I apologize if I am coming on hot and heavy, but I felt convicted

to have more say on this than an "all things are legal", so "don't

judge a brother, or sister". I am not judging anything or any body.

I am ministering in the word and prayer, and I pray that this will

be received in a good spirit, and provide valuable insights and 

scripture to bear on the discussion. Still a good thread.

Tattoos, to me, are matter of personal conscience. If you want one, get one.  It's your money. I have some good friends and acquaintances who have tattoos.  If you're a believer, just make sure it doesn't hurt your witness.  There should not be too much controversy over it.  Sometimes, we can make an issue out of a nonissue.

So are any of your friends' tattoos faith based in design, maybe?

My wife and I talked to a young lady with the whole of John 3.16 tattooed on her wrist area; it was her favorite Bible verse and mine also.

No, they are not faith-based, really.  They are interesting designs, one of them has Celtic designs and others have someone's name tattooed on them.  Most of them are pretty tame.  They are all strong believers.

@JasperWalls11 Seems like a lot of professing Christians have them in faith based designs also; sometimes they seem to struggle at first at the idea of having it done, but then when they do it wholeheartedly they seem to be without regret:
