Is hair not a covering for the head?
No.

That's odd. Paul said that a womans hair is given to her for a covering.

He did.

:)

Oh, ok. So Paul said that long hair is given to a woman for her covering.

WSB ADMITTED SOMETHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LOL

I thought I would add a few comments. My wife and daughters cover their heads when we are in the church and when we pray at home. I'll first say that I am not judging anyone who disagrees with me or casting any doubt on another's convictions and faith. I won't be contentious over this. The primary reasons that we felt lead to practice head covering, though, are:

1] It is a commandment specifically regarding praying and prophesying. In other words, this implies that a man being covered or a woman being uncovered any other time is not a shame. How can a person "remove" or "replace" their hair when the time dictates? They cannot. We believe it is a covering separate from hair.

2] Verses 5 and 6 six both speak of "covering" and hair as separate things. Paul says that if a woman will pray uncovered it is the "same as if" she had cut her hair. Verse 6 continues that if she will not cover let her cut her hair short...in other words she is behaving as a man by not covering, let her look like one. But since that is a shame, she should cover for prayer and when in the church.

3] Verses 14 and 15 provide support for a woman covering and a man uncovering by appealing to the "example" of nature. Paul does not say that a woman's hair is the covering he speaks of (she can't put that on an take it off when time dictates) but that even nature shows us a woman should cover and a man uncover by the amount of hair they have. Even nature teaches us what? That just as God has given long hair to the woman as both a covering and her glory, so should she cover (as in a veil) when she prays and is in the church. Likewise, just as God expects men to have short hair (because they are the image of God on earth) so too should he remove any covering he has on when he prays or is in the church.

4] Lastly, and of least importance, we see it as historically the practice of the faith. It was not until the 50's and 60's that covering fell out of style in most western cultures. However, if you look at many non-western cultures it is still the practice as it was of nearly all churches throughout history.

Let me end by saying I have no intention of being contentious over this issue. If you cover, I say praise God. If you do not, your service to God will be judged by God...not me. "Who art thou that judgest another man's servant. To his own master he standeth or falleth." Though I believe it is a commandment to cover (and uncover for men) I have never seen it as something so important that fighting and schism should follow.

In Christ,

Eric

Wonderfully put ....Thank You....

Would it bother you if your husband or pastor prayed with their hats on?

Why or why not?

It would not bother me at all.

I do not rule their life.

I'm not their conscence.

I would be more concerned with their heart before God.

Hey all! Here is the bible verse I was referring too in the bible about womans hair while praying. I am wondering if I should start to cover my head during prayer. But..I pray all throughout the day! So you think that hair is the covering then?

1 Corinthians 11:5-7

5And every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head

Oh thanks Book Wirm for your post  I must admit that if I have to do it to serve the Lord I will but when I think of head covering I have always thought of Muslims or something. No one in church ever wore a head cover. I only thought of it when I stumbled on that verse. :)

as far as a covering, i have not seen women regularly wearing head covering since i was a kid..... so really do not know what people are going to do if they decide that women must be covered.... will have a hard time getting this to come about..... last easter, think i only saw three ladies with bonnets on, and they were under the age of 8..... yes, young ladies.....

what is considered long?

what is considered short?

i have seen women with hair shorter then shoulder length, and to them that is long.....

i have seen men with longer then shoulder length hair and that was short to them..... ( i had hair to the middle of my shoulder blades and that was shorter then many of those around me )

by whos standard are we following here on hair length?

my wife has her hair past her waist, I love it, I brush it and braid it and fix it up for her....

even thou her hair is that long, it is short compared to some others in our fellowship..... there is a few women that have their hair shorter then my current hair style (which is what would normally be called a "regular")

a lady at the local hard ware store, has even shorter hair, and wears a leather "biker/golf" style cap.... of course, she is going through a bout of cancer treatments ( and beating it )

what is long and what is short...

About Head Coverings:

In Seminary... class 101 states... "the culture is never to influence Scriptures" for SCripture is given to change the culutre of man.

I have only seen head coverings in the Roman Catholic Church. THe last time I saw this Biblical mandate practiced was as a child and now only in the Quaker and Amish commuinities.

Christian submission is not something properly practiced. The world has gotten in the way.

What I see are young ladies dressing immodestly, pastors saying nothing and parents not parenting.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
