Church Mission Statements

Do you think it is ok for a church to have a mission statement? The options here are:

Here is ours:

Northwest Christian Church exists to glorify God. We are a Bible-based people, drawn together in worship and service, committed to meeting the specific needs of our community through the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We believe that a Great Commitment to the Great Commission (Matt. 28:18-20) and the Great Commandment (Matt. 22:37-40) will produce a Great Church. We are striving constantly for excellence in equipping the body to point people to Christ.

I personally believe that every church should have a clear goal for its operation and a plan to achieve it and for them to communicate it to their congregation and to the local community.

I think it's a good idea for a church to spell out their basic mission plan and identity.

It can answer a lot of questions to those that are seeking membership.

It's also vital for a new church to have it written down so that the original intention for it's being can be reffered to years down the road if it ever gets off course.

The Bible does a wonderful job of explaining what a church should be, but not everyone grasps just what that may be right off the bat. A church that puts it all together (as best it can) in a mission statement and/ or a statement of faith clearly defines what should be expected from the leadership and the members.

But, along with what Leonard said, if the Spirit is not present in the words, they might as well close the doors.

Eh, I don't necessarily disagree with these types of statements, however....too often I've seen churches spend time and money making these types of declarations, advertisements and training their members to be able to quote their "mission", and then they often don't spend the time going out and actually living it. If a church is actually being the Body of Christ in their community, their actions will be their statement. Like i said, I don't disagree per se, as long as a person (or church) doesn't rely on the statement to be their statement

Well I don't like the word "mission statement" it seems a little trendy a little corporate if you know what I mean. But the concept of a statement of faith, which I think is what the mission statement is getting at, is absolutely critical in my mind. In fact I would not attend a Church that did not have a complete and detailed statement of faith about what they believe.
