Book of Isaiah

I need help with Isaiah. I posted earlier on the Genesis thread in the various issues room, but decided that this is a topic of its own so here goes:

I am doing the Bible in a Year for the second time through. I have now reached Isaiah. I have been feeling pretty good about the understanding I am getting in the OT so far, and since I am doing it in chronological order, I have already read the prophets Joel, Jonah, Hosea, and Amos, and felt like I was 'getting it' with those.

But now I have hit Isaiah and I feel like I went from kindergarten to college It definitely seems advanced material!

I guess I'm wondering how you all do with the Book of Isaiah? Any good study recommendations?

So far, I've read that Isaiah's 66 chapters are sort of a condensed version of the Bible's 66 books, and that the divisions within the book can even be made to correspond to the Old and New Testaments.

It's the most quoted book of the Bible in the New Testament. It gives the most prophecies regarding Christ, direct and not hidden like some other prophecies elsewhere in the OT.

It is rich in symbology, metaphors and word pictures.

Much of the prophecy has been literally fulfilled, but many interpret them to have a double fulfillment in the future in 'that day' that have not yet occurred.

I guess I get lost the most in the way it jumps around, from what is interpreted as immediate situations Assyria, Sumeria, Israel, Judah, to what seem like endtimes scenarios and back again, with not much pattern to it as far as I can tell.

Also all these places that are mentioned for judgement: Egypt, Moab, Tyre and Sidon...it seems like it's talking to them as places in the region, then it seems like it's talking to fallen angels and heavenly kingdoms, like when it goes from the King of Babylon to Lucifer.

Anyway, this should be enough to get the topic off the ground. Any takers???

Ah Isaiah. Well, Isaiah is a very interesting book. I have read it once before,

but I forgot a lot of the stuff, so I started to read it again, and I am on Isaiah

30.

Well, I have studied well thus far with the book, and I do enjoy it.Recommend-ations? Umm, you should take down some key verses, passages, etc. in the

book. I write down key verses and passages for many books of the Bible (

mostly of the New Testament.)

Oh, one I could mention, that I'm sure everyone already knows. Isaiah portrayed the coming Messiah in detail. Called the "Suffering Messiah" this stands out because all the Jews were looking for a kingly Messiah. This prophecy went against all the things that the people were looking for.

One last interesting thing here: I will quote from A.R. Faussett

"The USE OF THE PRESENT AND PRETERITE in prophecy is no proof that the author is later than Isaiah. For seers view the future as present, and indicate what is ideally past, not really past; seeing things in the light of God, who "calls the things that are not as though they were." Moreover, as in looking from a height on a landscape, hills seem close together which are really wide apart, so, in events foretold, the order, succession, and grouping are presented, but the intervals of time are overlooked. "

I really like this verse in Isaiah, which refers to Jerusalem and Judah:

Isaiah 3:4

"And I will give children to be their princes, and babes shall rule over them."

Figure that one out.

I especially like Daniel. A very thought-provoking book you might say. On the

other hand, Isaiah is a VERY good book to witness to Jews, and it's a GREAT

book to study prophecy from.
