I thought David killed Goliath in the Bible. That is what I was taught when I was young. That came from the

King James Version. Since new bible translations have came out why has David killing goliath changed.

If the bible versions are all suppose to be Gods word but some easy to understand. why the confusion.

God is not the author of confusion.

Example- 2 samuel 21:19 In another battle with the philistines at Gob, Elhanan son of Jaare-Oregim

the bethlehemite killed Goliath the Gittite, who had a spear with a shaft like a weavers rod. (NIV BIBLE)

2 Samuel 21: 19 and again there was a battle in Gob with the philistines, where Elhanan the son of Jaare-Oregim

a bethlehemite, slew the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose spear was like a weavers beam. (KJV bible)

The niv bible says Elhanan killed Goliath

The KJV says Elhanan killed the brother of Goliath

I will check this up tonight, and get back to you about this. I would say that the KJV is correct in this passage because NIV follows a thought by thought translation, not word for word.

Hey I just found this on NET Bible - http://www.bible.org/netbible/index.htm

34sn The Hebrew text as it stands reads, “Elhanan son of Jaare-Oregim the Bethlehemite killed Goliath the Gittite.” Who killed Goliath the Gittite? According to 1 Sam 17:4-58 it was David who killed Goliath, but according to the MT of 2 Sam 21:19 it was Elhanan who killed him. Many scholars believe that the two passages are hopelessly at variance with one another. Others have proposed various solutions to the difficulty, such as identifying David with Elhanan or positing the existence of two Goliaths. But in all likelihood the problem is the result of difficulties in the textual transmission of the Samuel passage; in fact, from a text-critical point of view the books of Samuel are the most poorly preserved of all the books of the Hebrew Bible. The parallel passage in 1 Chr 20:5 reads, “Elhanan son of Jair killed Lahmi the brother of Goliath.” Both versions are textually corrupt. The Chronicles text has misread “Bethlehemite” (בֵּית הַלַּחְמִי, bet hallakhmi) as the accusative sign followed by a proper name אֶת לַחְמִי (’et lakhmi). (See the note at 1 Chr 20:5.) The Samuel text misread the word for “brother” (אַח, ’akh) as the accusative sign (אֵת, ’et), thereby giving the impression that Elhanan, not David, killed Goliath. Thus in all probability the original text read, “Elhanan son of Jair the Bethlehemite killed the brother of Goliath.”

Don't be so quick to judge. Here is an article that shows the KJV to be in error:

you will also notice how the niv completely leaves out many verses. Watch the numbering, it will somtimes say go from 34 to 39 with nothing inbetween. Alot of this is due to the writers of the NIV holding certain views.

One big one is they do not beleive in Christs divinity. They changed most every verse they could about this except for the ones that were so painfully obvious they couldnt do anything about it.

If someone believes the KJV to be the best Bible, than read it.

If I read the NIV, don't tell me I am reading a satanic bible because that is just absurd.

People quote from the av1611 website which is mostly full of hate and misrepresentations.

If the translators (not the "writers") of the NIV were trying to take out the references to Christ's deity, they sure did a lousy job.

Each and every chapter in John has it in there.

I mean, what gifts did Jesus receive at birth?

Incense is only fit for God. :emot-handshake:

Well the NIV certainly deserves criticism...but then again, so does any other translation. We have to constantly be searching the manuscripts we have to make sure that the translations are adequate. Even the KJV fails on certain levels.

As for myself, I'm a big fan of the NASB.

*sigh*

Goliath was likely a family or tribal name, so they are both right. To use an example in Jane Austen's time, when people were known by their family names...The first daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bennett (who would have been called that by most people, even many close friends), would have been called "Miss Bennett" until she were married. Her sisters would also be called "Miss Bennett" if they were in a situation where their older sisters were not around to get the names confused...otherwise they'd be known by their first names "Miss Elizabeth" and so on.

I agree, I like the NASB best, but the docrine of inerrancy only applies to the original manuscripts

I can only type with one hand right now, so I'll make this brief:

The translation debate is rediculous. Read what you are comfortable with. If it's KJV only, fine. If it's NIV, fine. If it's NASB fine. Whatever. But this pointless debate is getting nowhere.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
