You guys wouldn't want to give me a hard time would ya??.. :emot-pray:

I think this thread is for whether or not you speak in tongues..

So.....

Do you speak in tongues?

If not, do you want to?

Hmm, evading the subject.

NO, she is trying to stay on the subject....tongues. You are trying to trip her up in semantics.

Let us please let this thread continue on subject. I will probably clean out the posts that are off topic.

Praise God!!!

How did you guys first start speaking in tongues?

Most haltingly. The Scriptures speak of 'stammering lips' AND 'other tongues.' I certainly had only 'stammering lips' first. One fellow I know, after more than 30 years of being thus gifted, still only says: "Ooh ba,ba,ba,ba,ba,ba..........."

Speaking in tongues is a gift, but only if it has a message in there. When we speak in tongues in a place, and if it

Saying 'Ooh, ba, ba, ba, ba, ba, ba' is gifted?

Being in the Presence of God can be an overwhelming experience, and people will react differently. The Presence of God IS a gift, no? There's no harm in being skeptical, secondeve, but there is no need to mock.

And, yes, there have been MANY instances of people speaking actual languages they did not know. In about 1946, a Seventh Day Adventist (not exactly a 'tongues' endorsing group, you know!) missionary was giving his first sermon to his Japanese congregation, when suddenly his translator stopped translating. After a few sentences he asked: "Why have you stopped translating?" The translator responded: "Because you have begun speaking perfect Japanese"!

I also heard this story from a Jewish Christian psychiatrist. Before he became a Christian, a Christian friend knew he was having a lot of family problems, and had invited him to a prayer meeting of prominent Christian businessmen living in the area. After many invitations he finally went, and when they invited anybody who would like prayer to come forward, he thought, "Well, it can't HURT....." and went forward. Someone in the crowd obviously knew him quite well, and was praying for his specific family needs....marriage on the rocks.....kids on drugs....etc. in Hebrew, obviously to spare him the public embarassment of airing this 'dirty laundry.'

But after everyone stopped praying, the deeply moved psychiatrist could not spot anybody he knew, so he started asking people if they had been standing by his left shoulder praying for him. At last a guy in a big Stetson hat said he had, and the psychiatrist recognized his voice, so he said: "I really apologize, but I just can't place you. Where do I know you from?" The man responded he was quite sure they'd never met. Doubtful of the man's statement, the psychiatrist said: "Well I just wanted to thank you for praying for me so earnestly. Your Hebrew was really beautiful; where did you study Hebrew?" To the psychiatrist's utter astonishment, the man stated he had never studied Hebrew, or been to Divinity School, but was 'just a rancher....'

And actually the Old Testament passage about 'stammering lips and other tongues' follows on the heels of the passage where the Lord says He will speak to the people 'line upon line, precept upon precept......' The Hebrew here is "Sav l'sav, sav l'sav, kav l'kav, kav l'kav," WHICH HAS NO MEANING IN HEBREW! It is the equivalent of baby-talk or gibberish. This is EXACTLY what God promises, saying: "THIS IS THE REFRESHING!!!"

I understood it to mean that it was a real spoken language that the disciples used to speak when going to other lands where they didnt know the language.

I am probably the one that started getting off subject when it comes to speaking in tongues in the post started by johnz.

My having started qustioning of the validity of tongues as being truely scriptural was a very serious issue to me. I had been praying for many years in tongues before I started questioning what I was really doing, and what I had been taught about tongues.

During this time of quesioning of what tongues were all about I was reading through the book of Acts. I have always enjoyed the reading of the 10th chapter of Acts, then as I went into chapter 11 where Peter is taken to the carpet to give an answer as to why he went to the gentiles with the gospel. Peter reherses for them they events as the occured and then comes to this comment:

Acts 11:15 And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning.

16. Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost.

As on us at the beginning..... Peter is remembering what Jesus said when he departed 10 days prior to the day of pentecost and quotes it to those of the circumcision that have questioned what he had done.

It didn't sound to me as if tongues was necessarily an on going thing.

There are other reasons that make me question the validity of tongues today. If you would like to discuss why you think that there is no question, that tongues are for us today, or if you, like me, have some reservations. Let's talk.

Daave, I combined your topic with the one already in progress. One should be sufficient, I think. I am also going to move this whole discussion to Doctrinal Discussions. I think it is one best discussed "in family."

One caution though. This is a subject that many feel strongly about and disagree on. Remember that we are talking with our Brothers and Sisters and let's do this in love.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

      Shalom everyone,

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
