No. I do not "believe thus and such" and fit everything around a belief. Beliefs are secondary. Things shouldn't be fitted around beliefs.

Rather beliefs should fit around evidence. Evidence is primary in my life, not my belief in any one theory or religion. If my faith is in contrivance to the evidence, then the faith is gonna have to budge.

Concerning the idea of an old earth, it is very possible that the earth has been around for greater than 6000 years and that the Genesis account of creation is accurate. Again, Genesis describes the earth as without form and void. Later, God tells Adam to replenish the earth. I believe the earth was around a long time before it became without form and void. It is very likely that it was populated by dinosaurs and perhaps what we now refer to as cave men. For some reason, I believe God destroyed this creation by a massive flood and then we come to Genesis, a starting over point.

Mankind has to all go back to Adam and Eve, lest we were not all born in sin. If that is the case, then we would only need a redeemer when we committed our first transgression against God. In other words, we were not born in sin and our mothers didn't conceive us in iniquity. Also, if this were the case, Christ would not have had to be born of a virgin, only a descendant of someone other than Adam.

I absolutely believe in the Genesis account of creation as well as the story of Noah's ark being true. At the same time, I also believe the earth could be very old. To me, if I cannot trust the Bible to tell me the truth in Genesis, I cannot trust it's accuracy anywhere else. It is all or nothing with me, so I believe it to be absolutely innerant and the Word of God. At the same time, I don't necessarily believe God found it necessary to reveal everything about his creation to us. In some things, the Bible merely gives us clues.
