Catholic teaching accepts evolution as a scientific theory and does not read the Biblical story of creation literally. But it disagrees with what it calls "evolutionism," the view that the story of life has no role for God as its prime author.

Benedict has argued this way since his teaching days. At his inaugural mass after his election last year, he declared: "We are not some casual and meaningless product of evolution. Each of us is the result of a thought of God."

Lots of Catholic bashing in the world these days. I am not a Catholic, don't intend to become one, but I do know that one who is not genuinely found in Christ cannot truthfully be called a Catholic.

Simon Peter's bones are in the Vatican city.

The full name of the Catholic church is The Catholic Christian Church.

Some of their doctrines don't line up with what some of us, myself included would call biblical Christianity, but the church is indeed Christian and a staunch defender of the faith in Christ.

They do not believe in evolution, catholics who do are an anomaly and do not have the support of the church in it. I suppose that's why the source is called "yahoo" news.

Is that article for real? The erstwhile Father Horn says the Catholic church doesn't agree with creationist views. Sounds fishy to me, no pun intended, but then again maybe it is intended.

The official stance of Rome--unless I am mistaken--is that evolution is a valid, but unproven scientific theory. That means it is a line of thought and research which has some merit, and that researchers can legitimately investigate. Some popes have said they believe in evolution, other have remained silent on the issue. Benedict, like his predecessor believes the data compiled points compellingly toward some evolutionary model of human development, rather than a 'sudden creation.'

What Pope Benedict XVI is saying is that he believes God, not blind chance, controlled the evolution of man.

As I initiated this thread I suppose I ought to reply to some of the comments:

The literalness & reliability of the Genesis record of creation by a Sovereign Creator-God is not Roman Catholic belief. Myth & allegory rule the roost with the papacy and those who adhere to its philosophy. Someone should tell the Vatican with all due haste that even the Lord Jesus Christ - the very Head of the one true Christian Church - believed in the literalness of the first man, Adam, and the reliability of the creation account. The Vatican twist on Genesis is what occurs when one starts adding a long list of self-concocted tenets to the settled Scriptures of Truth. "They Word is forever settled in heaven," but not on earth if one follows the whims of religious agnostics.

The official Roman Catholic position on evolution.

And this on the name of the Catholic Church from Wikipedia:

"The proper name of this Church is the Catholic Church. The Catholic Church has consistently referred to itself by this name at least since the early second century, when the term Catholic Church appears in the writings of St. Ignatius of Antioch. The Roman in Roman Catholic Church has its origins in sixteenth century England in the wake of the English Reformation. Disdain for Pope Clement VII and succeeding Popes was expressed in England in slurs aimed at Rome such as Romish, papist, Romanish, and papistical. While the use of Roman no longer is a slur and usually does not carry a negative connotation, the proper name of the Church remains the Catholic Church."

From Answers In Genesis dated Sept.2, 2006:

Pope Benedict XVI is hosting a summit of some scholars this weekend to discuss natural selection and evolution. This is interesting both because of the Roman Catholic Church

Gee whiz! "Peter's bones are in Vatican City"?!! So states an earlier post. So, if his bones are there, how come the Apostle Paul, when writing to the Christians in Rome, never once addressed whom some think was the very "head of the Church," Peter himself, or made mention of Peter's service there - or even Peter's EXISTENCE in the so-called "Eternal City"? This is fifth-grade elementary understandable, no? Momentum rules on this one over rationale.

Thank You Old Timer for giving a straight answer. Yes the proper name is the Catholic Church. I might also mention that Catholic means Universal (hence the Idea of one Church like Jesus Christ talked about in Mathew 16:18-19). I need to also tell you that the stance of the Catholic Church on evolution is this. The Church doesn't rule out evolution, but if it is valid, it was all part of Gods plan. The Church also doesn't take Genesis literally word for word.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
