From Mark:

14 Later He appeared to the eleven as they sat at the table; and He rebuked their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who had seen Him after He had risen. 15 And He said to them,

As to drinking poison, again it is not to tempt God. There have been many missionaries that have reported to have been poisoned by indigenous tribes and have had no effect testifying to the goodness and mercy of God. My own brother was in Bahrein with a company he worked for and went out often to lunch with his colleagues. He prayed over his meal all the time and not just silently. His coworkers came down with food poisoning often but he never did and ate the same food.

My understanding is theses GIFTS are used in certain circumstances up to God's discretion.

If it's in the Bible it is true, just because a majority may not exhibit these particular Gifts doesn't mean it doesn't exist. In many 3rd world countries, many, many people can attest to missionaries exhibiting these Gifts.

If God/Jesus said it, that settles it. :)

Thanks for those answers.

This passage has always bothered me; my congregation does not take up snakes or drink poison. However the wording when it says "these signs will accompany those who believe", could lead one to believe that these signs will be the mark of all believers. I know this is what the Holiness Churches which handle snakes believe.

But thanks for the missionary accounts from today it put things in perspective for me. But why are intentionally speaking in tongues okay, and snakes not? I guess the difference would be the interpretation of tongues having value to the congregation?

The intent of those mentions of snakes and poison were to assure us that nothing can harm us! There is no call for the intentional handling of snakes or drinking of poison. People who intentionally do that are misinterpreting the Word, not understanding the spiritual message there, and are playing with the sin of tempting God.

We have a snake, she's a Royal [ball] Python. We hold her quiet frequently, though she is not poisonous, she could still bite.

How is that different from healing and speaking in tongues, both mentioned in the same passage in the same way?

Look at the passage, it says these things will follow those who believe, it does not say will follow only some who believe, or only some of these things will follow those who believe. It also says that the Lord will confirm the Word with these accompanying signs. He calls them signs, which would tell me that indeed they are miraculous signs.

Just out of curiosity what makes you want to have a snake? I know it is not a sin to have snake, but the snake was cursed. The curse was supposed to make the snake repugnant to man. I have always wondered why some Christians like them.

:th_frusty: We got her because our son loves nature, and Steve Irwin, who got him interested in Herpetology. She was a learning tool, and not as smelly as a Bearded Dragon. She is actually the cheapest pet we own, and the easiest to take care of.

Man was cursed too, if I remember correctly, I have one of those as well.

Snakes are only repugnant to women. . . But so are spiders. We feel it is important for our children to learn about all of nature. Lack of understanding creates fear.

I just wondered. I am not scared of them, but I think they are ugly. One of my friends owns Cobra's. I have handled them(helping him out), but really do not like them. I think they are nasty. The king is so strong it is ridiculous.

Yikes! Cobra's are not my kind of snake. Does your friend own Cobra's to milk them for their venom? I can't imagine owning a poisonous snake as a pet. To dangerous.

Snakes are not ugly, but I can see why you would think that. I see them as just another part of God's creation. I am certain I would never own a spider though.

When I was growing up, my mother would go out to the wood pile, move the logs and get Garter Snakes for us to hold. She was never afraid of them, even when she was little, she would do the same thing. Now, she comes over here and asks to hold Fang, that's the snakes name. Sort of a play on words, since she doesn't have any.

This snake is the most docile creature I've ever come in contact with. No matter how long it's been since we held her, she still acts as if we hold her all the time. She is in no way tame though and if she thought we were going to hurt her or smelled like prey, she'd strike.

Is this getting off topic?

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
