I currently listen to only Christian music. I even destroyed my old music when I got more serious about Christianity. However I am not completely closed to it. I listen to the radio while driving from time to time. However if I listen to secular music I am careful with it. I won't listen to music about sex, drugs, etc. Only the music that is sort of "neutral". And I only buy CD's from Christian bands, so the secular music I listen to is limited to the radio.

Although I feel I should warn you, I have made no fewer than 3 music topics that exploded into huge angry debates... so be warned. :emot-wave:

Umm...why on earth would they turn into "huge, angry debates?" Is the subject of music actually THAT touchy, or worth getting angry about? Certainly, there are more important issues in our walk with God, aren't there? I just find that strange.

Obviously, the Holy Spirit led you to get rid of those, and I commend you.

I would agree that music shouldn't be that touchy, but it definately is. In fact, not even just Christian vs Secular music can heat up. I have seen debates blow up between Christian Hymn-type music compared to Christian rock. It is a very touchy subject I'm afraid. Although it seems like nothing crazy has happened in your topic yet.

True. But you've only gotten 14 replies so far.

I do find that some of the secular music makes spiritual points the artists probably never intended. At the least, it can be a jumping-off point for prayer.

ABSOLUTELY!!! God is all-powerful, and can work through anything. If I hadn't started listeining to this dreaded "secular" band, I wouldn't be where I am today spiritually

i personally listen to secular music the majority of the day, although since i found God it has been mostly country. I dont see anything wrong with it... i feel i can listen to something an not necessarily take it in, there are certain songs like 'bless the broken road' for example that i do take in because they mean something to me.

Personally, I love music. There are a great many secular bands that are extremely talented. However, I will not support a secular band financially. Not every Christian band is good, musically or spiritually, but any band that lifts up the name of our Saviour should be receiving your financial support over ANY secular musician.

It bothers me that "High School Musical" outsold the Top 8 Christian artists combined.

That's an interesting attitude, and to a point, it makes sense.

I listen to a lot of classical music, as well as rock, so I don't really feel guilty supporting classical musicians; on the other hand, I also feel that the $13 I spend for a CD isn't really going to make or break the artist.

As far as Christian musicians go, I think I'd rather give my money to a church, or a missionary, who will use that money to spread the gospel, rather than to a Christian artist who isn't doing much for my walk with God....and who, IMO, is musically mediocre at best.

BTW, that brings up another question...I love the Mormon Tabernacle choir, and for the most part, their music DOES uplift the Lord -- yet, they are obviously NOT a Christian organization (although, to an extent, they do uplift God). Should I be buying their records and supporting them, even if their music does touch me spiritually?

I listen to mostly secular music. The reason is as a musician myself i can't stand most christian bands because of their technical level of playing ability. I can't find anything that sounds different except for Norma Jean(who are savage). As for country music....................run away. :24:

I've also been in debates about this that have gotten pretty emotionally charged. Probably because music itself is emotionally charged ("emotionally charged" is not always a bad thing...it's just that it tends to make debates get out of control) and most people who love music feel very strongly about their tastes in music.

Anyway, I pay more attention to what the music is saying than whether or not they're supported by a Christian label. For me, good lyrics are very important. That's why I listen to people like U2 (not a "Christian Band," though all but one band member have professed to being Christians). Lots of their songs are directly relating to God, and many more still allude to the Christian life or seeking God, or things like that...yet they have never been supported by a Christian label, and you'll never see their song "Yahweh" up for a Dove award. Of course...I'd listen to them whether or not they were Christians, because...man...who can beat U2? :24: (says the smitten fan)

Music is music to me. I listen to whatever melody and musical genre fits my mood at the time, secular or not.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
