"The Gospel is like a caged lion. It doesn't need to be defended. It only needs to be let out (or let loose)!"

Spurgeon, however, defended the Gospel.

The quote he was using is that, though people may attack the Gospel, the Gospel will win the day. He was responding to liberal theologians that were saying the problems of the world are psychological and social problems and the Gospel was outdated. Someone asked him to write a defense of the Gospel in light of this, basically, how the Bible does meet those psychological needs. Spurgeon offered this quote as a response.

He is not saying we should not engage in apologetics (after all, he did) or defend the Gospel (after all, he did)...but instead that the Gospel stands on its own and does not need to fit into any box.

How can anyone say that the Gospel doesn't support the psychological needs of the world today. If we go out into the world, and the powers that be in our circle forsake us with evil: The Bible is a book that gives us positive reinforcement, and assures us that through God and the Father: All things are possible. Any existing power struggle in this world surely doesn't extend that comfort as liberally.
