Another diamond factoid: Diamonds, no matter the size, are each a single molecule. (They're just a buncha carbons bonded in a crystal lattice.)

Factoid #2: Diamond is the clearest substance known. When glass gets several feet thick, it turns green. Pure diamond of any thickness is totally clear.

Also, i remember hearing about a diamond in space that is several MILES wide. I'll post the article if I can find it.

Consider this, too - diamonds are pure carbon, remember? As far as I know, it is believed that carbon remains like this come from life-forms - coal, oil, diamonds, all pure carbon, come from decayed organic matter (life forms). Correct?

Nope. Diamonds come from the Earth's core via 'pipes' in igneous rocks. Carbonates break up in the high temperatures and pressures, and become pure carbon. Another factoid - if the market wasn't manipulated by De Beers, they would almost be worthless.

OK, please explain the "diamonds come from the Earth's core" part. Does that mean the diamonds were already formed in the Earth's core? Or that carbon molecules fused together into individual rocks - if so how? Or does it mean something else?

Hmmm . . . I wish the article had explained how the scientists figured it was a diamond in the heart of the burnt-out star.

Diamonds are formed deep down in the core, from carbon-bearing molecules, and are formed under high pressure, but relatively low temperature. These conditions are quite rare, and are usually occur in very old rock formations called 'cratons', eg in South Africa. These are the result of very old continental formation and collision. The diamonds are brought to the surface by volcanic pipes, which are eruptions from very deep in the Earth's core. These extrude the rock in the form of kimberlite, which contains the diamonds as xenoliths ('foreign rocks').

OK . . . but I am still not understanding what causes the pure carbon molecules to come together in the first place.
