11:13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises,

11:39 And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise:

You can not just take a line from a verse and comment on it, you have see what context it is in, why did you conveniently cut short verse 13?

13All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance. And they admitted that they were aliens and strangers on earth.

Verse 13 is simply telling us how All the people mentioned in previous verses were promised various things, such as with Abraham a great city and nation, however they never got to see these promises come to fruitation, but they simply carried on in faith , knowing that it God would keep his promise even though they may never see it themelseves.

verse 39 should really go hand in hand with verse 40

39These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised.

40God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect.

this is basically commenting on how genuine faith lasts to the end, but emotional decisions do not. True Faith is to completely beleive in the truth. This also shows how the New Covenant is far better and superior to the old covenant

EXACTLY!

They did not actually SEE Jesus come in the flesh, but they lived in faith, knowing He was coming, they believed G-d's Word about the Messiah and they were saved. Unfortunately, they just weren't around when He came and never got to SEE Jesus, the Messiah, come to Earth.

I agree. This is talking about Old Testament people who believed. They lived in faith and looked forward to the coming Messiah. He didn't come in their lifetime, but they still had faith and followed God.

The key to understanding these verses is found in verse 40 in Heb 11. "...that they with out us should not be made perfect"."

When Jesus returns, these heroes of faith will come with him and we that are alive at His coming will all enter into the "promise" together which is the redemption of our bodies, full salvation, body, soul, and spirit. Death will be overcome in every way.

The exciting thing for me is that there is a people who will never have to experience physical death. They will be alive at Jesus' return and be change! Wow! That's what I want.
