We had a huge sinkhole swallow I-70 right here in Frederick, MD recently. It started at 2 feet in diameter at like 3 AM and by noon the next day it had spread across the Interstate and was 40 feet wide and 70 some feet deep. it shut down the Highway and paralyzed the City. I know because I was stuck in the traffice for over two hours. :whistling:

We had a big one in az not that long ago. I dont recall that they ever figured out why it did that, but the area has a lot of groundwater subsidence fissures to start with.

As the water usage increases with the increase in population and removal of oil, things are going to start settling. We have had a few sink holes here in Florida in the last couple of years, and it wouldn't surprise me that it was because of the amount of water being removed is far exceeding the water being replaced.

I looked up the sinkhole in MD, and it is being blamed on limestone - limestone erodes easily (caves are formed form limestone erosion).

Florida is a natural sinkhole area, actually, without the water removal. Maybe it might speed up the process, but they occur without any help due to the geology of the place.
