  1. In addressing the atheist criticism of the Bible on this issue, I concluded that the supernatural darkness of Matthew 27:45 resulted in God miraculously speeding up time so Jesus would have to spend less time in the grave. If that did change the chronology, it would result in an extra day and night, bringing the chronology perfectly in line. http://www.bereawiki.com/wiki/ABC:Matthew_12#Verse_40
  2. 1 Corinthians 7 is the major chapter in the Bible on the issue of divorce, the entire chapter is about it. The KJV incorrectly translated the Greek word "parthenos" as virgin in the chapter but the word actually means divorced or widowed (which probably led to the faulty belief in priestly celibacy by Catholicism). Sexual immorality was the only basis Biblically for divorce, and Paul strictly forbade it otherwise, even if the spouse is not a believer. 1 Corinthians 7:10 And unto the married I command, yet not I, but the Lord, Let not the wife depart from her husband: 11 But and if she depart, let her remain unmarried, or be reconciled to her husband: and let not the husband put away his wife. 12 But to the rest speak I, not the Lord: If any brother hath a wife that believeth not, and she be pleased to dwell with him, let him not put her away. 13 And the woman which hath an husband that believeth not, and if he be pleased to dwell with her, let her not leave him. 14 For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband: else were your children unclean; but now are they holy. 15 But if the unbelieving depart, let him depart. A brother or a sister is not under bondage in such cases: but God hath called us to peace. 16 For what knowest thou, O wife, whether thou shalt save thy husband? or how knowest thou, O man, whether thou shalt save thy wife? To illustrate this, Paul used the analogy of abiding in the same calling we are saved in, to point out one should stay with their spouse regardless of whether that spouse likewise has become saved. 1 Corinthians 7:17 ¶ But as God hath distributed to every man, as the Lord hath called every one, so let him walk. And so ordain I in all churches. 18 Is any man called being circumcised? let him not become uncircumcised. Is any called in uncircumcision? let him not be circumcised. 19 Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but the keeping of the commandments of God. 20 Let every man abide in the same calling wherein he was called. 21 Art thou called being a servant? care not for it: but if thou mayest be made free, use it rather. 22 For he that is called in the Lord, being a servant, is the Lord's freeman: likewise also he that is called, being free, is Christ's servant. 23 Ye are bought with a price; be not ye the servants of men. 24 Brethren, let every man, wherein he is called, therein abide with God. Paul in verses 25-38 addresses those widowed and whether they are allowed to remarry (which again the KJV typically translates as virgin, wrongly). Paul states that it is permissible for one whose spouse has died to remarry since the marriage vows are nullified upon death, but that he considers it better to have just one spouse during one's lifetime. 1 Corinthians 7:39 ¶ The wife is bound by the law as long as her husband liveth; but if her husband be dead, she is at liberty to be married to whom she will; only in the Lord. 40 But she is happier if she so abide, after my judgment: and I think also that I have the Spirit of God. I have by the way done a full study of the usage of parthenos in the Bible in drawing these conclusions. It cannot mean virgin or its usage in 1 Corinthians 7:25-26 and Revelation 14:4 would contradict multiple passages stating God blesses marriage. (Hebrews 13:4, Proverbs 18:22, 1 Timothy 4:1-3, Ephesians 5:22-33, etc.) http://www.bereawiki.com/wiki/Virgin_Birth_and_Priestly_Celibacy#Revelation_14:4_and_Marriage
  3. I read an article recently mentioning that with all the job hunting going on, it may be better to go with a creative approach that will make a resume stick out. This isn't the article I read, but is along a similar vein. The new trend may be towards creative resumes that stand out at a time when managers spend very little time looking through stacks of resumes. http://www.forbes.com/sites/dailymuse/2014/07/23/how-to-get-your-resume-noticed-in-the-blink-of-an-eye/
  4. Stars is a reference at times to angels: Revelation 1:20 The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches. Morning stars is a phrase referenced elsewhere also: Job 38:7 When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy? Revelation 2:26 And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations: 27 And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father. 28 And I will give him the morning star.
  5. Coheir raises an excellent passage. I would also add that the angels themselves are curious about the things mankind experiences through the Gospel. 1 Peter 1:12 Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into.
  6. This is actually explicitly answered in the Bible. The answer is no. Romans 6:1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? 2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? 3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? 4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: 6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. 7 For he that is dead is freed from sin. 8 Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: 9 Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. 10 For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. 11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. 12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. 13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. 14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. 15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid. 16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? 17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. 18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness. 19 I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness. 20 For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. 21 What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. 22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. 23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
  7. There's an informative article on the subject at Wikipedia. Looks fraudulent to me and it appears to date to the middle ages, not the time of Jesus. It's not mentioned in the Bible anyway.
  8. As others are pointing out, Satan will clearly not be forgiven. My understanding is that Satan had full knowledge of the choice made in rebelling against God, unlike Adam and Eve who did so because Satan tricked them. Those with greater knowledge seem to be held more accountable by God: Luke 12:48 But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more. Hebrews 2:3 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him; 4 God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?
  9. If so it's because it harms others, not oneself. Biblically fornication or sexual sin is the only sin against our bodies the temples of God. Thus secondhand smoke could be a sin but I'm not convinced private use would be. 1 Corinthians 6:18 Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body. 19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
  10. Because of our sins, we were under the fear of death and power of Satan before Jesus freed us. Romans 6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. 7 For he that is dead is freed from sin. Acts 26:18 To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me. Hebrews 2:14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; 15 And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.
  11. The following is just a concise summary of my **link removed **at my apologetics website, **name removed *** 1. Human Population Growth: Annual population growth rates exceed 1% in most of the world's countries, and at a 1% growth rate one goes from 8 people to 7 billion in just 2,071 years. Even if assuming population grew just half as fast as it does today, at a 0.50% growth rate, human civilization would still be only 4,130 years old. And if dropping down to rates just 1/5th the rates seen today, at a 0.20% growth rate, 8 individuals still grow to 7 billion in just 6,849 years. https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/rankorder/2002rank.html For an Evolutionist to argue that human population has been around millions of years they must argue that growth has been at a standstill all that time, and that human population did not begin growing substantially until the past 10,000 years. This is a strong evidence the world is younger. 2. Dinosaur Soft Tissue Multiple instances have now been documented of dinosaur soft tissue including flexible blood vessels and preserved dinosaur skin. Even large numbers of dinosaur eggs with the soft eggshells preserved by massive amounts of sediment after being flooded out of their nests were discovered. While iron has been shown to be capable of preserving soft tissue for 2 years, it does not explain how the organic material could have been preserved for tens of millions, contrary to all predictions of evolution. Examples: A) 2005 discovery of T-Rex soft tissue. B) 2009 discovery of hadrosaur soft tissue. C) 2013 discovery of hadrosaur soft tissue. D) 2013 lufengosaurus egg soft tissue. 3. Transitional Forms Darwin's falsifiable prediction that the fossil record would produce the required transitions between core types of life has been utterly proven false. Thus his original model of phyletic gradualism was largely abandoned after 1972 when Gould and Eldredge created a new theory, Punctuated Equilibrium, proposing evolution just sped up too fast for the transitions to appear in the fossil record - a convenient way of denying the fossil record's evidence to move the goalposts. Evolution: Library: Punctuated Equilibrium http://creation.com/images/pdfs/tj/j11_3/j11_3_292-298.pdf Transitions listed today in Wikipedia's list of transitional forms are the same types of life seen today, ancient snails and nautiloids (e.g. Ammonoidea, Nautiloidea) which are similar to snails and nautiloids seen today. Ancient octopi (e.g. Palaeoctopus, Proteroctopus, Vampyronassa) which are strikingly similar to octopi seen today. There are ancient cockroaches (Aphthoroblattina), butterflies (Archaeolepis), spiders (Attercopus, Eoplectreurys), bees (Melittosphex), ants (Sphecomyrma), and leaf insects (Eophyllium), similar to insects today. There are ancient pangolins (Eomanis). There are ancient deer (Heteroprox), camels (Protylopus), and antelope (Eotragus). Etc. However, what is generally lacking are the transitions between these core types of life. Microevolution is compatible with the Genesis 1 account where species were told to speciate after their kinds, and does not infer a common ancestor. List of transitional fossils - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia A number of bipedal fossils have been discovered in recent years, and the oldest hominids in humanity's family tree are all now recognized to have walked upright and had unusual complexity similar to modern man, such as advanced faces. Orrorin tugenensis walked upright and was in an advanced stage of evolution. Sahelanthropus tchadensis discovered walked upright and had the face of a hominid half its age. Ardipithecus ramidus walked upright and was so advanced it disproved the popular apes to humans theory. Footprints discovered in 2009 showed Erectus walked upright. And Lucy, aka Afarensis, walked upright per a new study in 2011. * Ardipithecus: Oldest Skeleton of Human Ancestor Found * Orrorin: BBC News | SCI/TECH | 'Oldest' ape-man fossils unearthed * Sahelanthropus: Palaeoanthropology: Hominid revelations from Chad : Article : Nature Facelift seals standing of oldest hominid : Nature News Oldest member of human family found : Nature News * Erectus: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/27/science/27foot.html * Afarensis: "Lucy" Was No Swinger, Walked Like Us, Fossil Suggests On top of this a large number of alleged missing links have been discovered to have coexisted so that their evolving from one another as had been claimed is highly unlikedly. Microevolutionary Rates Microevolutionary rates today are consistent with a young earth, rather than millions or billions of years. Rapid Evolution Examples include Australia's cane toads which evolved longer legs and heat tolerance within a few decades, Italian wall lizards which evolved larger heads and new gut structures within a few decades, flowering plants, and rodents. That they can adapt so quickly suggests Earth is far younger, and that a common ancestor is false or we should be able to see the transitions between core types of life occur. 12. We are all accountable for our own decisions, choices, and actions from an eternal perspective. Ezekiel 18:20 The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him. There are distinctions in punishments, the more one knows the more one will be held accountable by God. James 3:1 My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation. Luke 12:48 But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more. Matthew 23:14 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation. It seems to be a common misconception that Hell will just be one giant place of torment with no different levels of punishment, but Biblically there are differences in rewards (Luke 19:11-27, 2 Timothy 4:8, Philippians 3:14) and an elaborate judging process according to one's deeds (Romans 2:6, Revelation 20:13), so logically there will be differences in punishment also.
  13. Here's a passage I think sheds light on Jesus' sacrifice. Jesus had the glory and power of Heaven and the universe itself at His control, but risked His power, His privilege, and His authority in an attempt to save the human race. He took the form of a servant, bearing humiliation and risking everything, to try and save others. Philippians 2:5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: 7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. 9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. It may also be contrasted with the following: John 10:17 Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. 18 No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father. Isaiah 59:15 Yea, truth faileth; and he that departeth from evil maketh himself a prey: and the LORD saw it, and it displeased him that there was no judgment. 16 ¶ And he saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor: therefore his arm brought salvation unto him; and his righteousness, it sustained him. 17 For he put on righteousness as a breastplate, and an helmet of salvation upon his head; and he put on the garments of vengeance for clothing, and was clad with zeal as a cloke. 18 According to their deeds, accordingly he will repay, fury to his adversaries, recompence to his enemies; to the islands he will repay recompence. 19 So shall they fear the name of the LORD from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against him. 20 And the Redeemer shall come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the LORD.
  14. I just want to point out that God convicts us of areas of sin in our lives, and this could be considered the working of the Holy Spirit. Even Paul considered himself not to have attained perfection (Philippians 3:12) and cried out to God about his own wretchedly sinful nature. (Romans 7:24) If we judge ourselves we won't be judged. (1 Corinthians 11:31) God convicts Christians of sin in their lives and they are to continually forsake it. (1 John 1:8-10, 2:1, Galatians 6:1) That you do show a heart to seek God if anything is a sign you aren't lukewarm and desire God, and I encourage you to continue pursuing God. For confirmation of your salvation, I strongly recommend reading 1 John - that was recommended to me the first few years after I became a Christian and it really helped me. There are a lot of ways listed by which we can know we are saved in that book. Christians are told to work out their salvation with concern (Philippians 2:12-13) to make sure they are saved. (2 Corinthians 13:5) In fact, it's when we are confident we are saved that we are in danger of falling, which is why Paul spoke of carefully disciplining himself and taking watch over himself to make sure that after preaching to others he would not be a castaway. (1 Corinthians 9:27, 10:12) Hope that helps - God bless!
  15. I agree with the OP that the Holy Spirit is an individual not a force. The Bible says the Holy Spirit can be grieved and is our access to God the Father. Ephesians 4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. 1 Corinthians 12:13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. Ephesians 2:18 For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father. I would also point out that there's confusion here over what being "one" means. People tend to ignore that Christians are said to be "one" with God in the same way Jesus was "one" with the Father, and in the same chapter no less. John 17:11 And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are. John 17:20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; 21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. 22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one: 23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me. Galatians 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. Hebrews 2:11 For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one: for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren, Now, Jesus, God the Father, and God the Holy Spirit all are said to bear witness in Heaven. 1 John 5:6 This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth. 7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. 8 And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one. However, there does seem to be a progression in authority. Jesus is above all but God the Father, since Jesus helped create all that exists. Jesus is above humans and every other name. God the Father is the only one above Jesus. Ephesians 1:21 Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: 22 And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, 23 Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all. Colossians 1:15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: 16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: 17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. 19 For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell; John 14:28 Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I. John 8:17 It is also written in your law, that the testimony of two men is true. 18 I am one that bear witness of myself, and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me. Oneness even applies to marriage as well it seems: Mark 10:7 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife; 8 And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh. 1 Corinthians 6:16 What? know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh. 17 But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit. It is interesting that the book of Acts as well as other books repeatedly speaks of the Christian church worshipping God with a oneness or singleness of heart, mind, and spirit. (Acts 1:14, 2:1, 2:46, 4:24, 4:32, 5:12,15:25, Romans 12:16, 15:5-7, 1 Corinthians 3:8, 2 Corinthians 13:11, Philippians 1:27, 2:2, 1 Peter 3:8) Paul uses the analogy of the Christian body to describe how Christians are one as a church, with different members but one whole. (Romans 12:4-8, 1 Corinthians 10:17, 12:4-31, Colossians 3:15) There's a lot of confusion over what the Bible means when it speaks of oneness, hopefully this helps clarify somewhat. To me the whole concept of oneness is summed up in this verse: John 14:23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.
  16. I would also point out that Deuteronomy 22:28-29 did not refer to rape but to consensual sex. As seen from the KJV, it lacks the key phrase "force her" which exists in v. 25, a verses earlier. And verses 25-27 clearly show that the penalty for raping a woman by "forc[ing] her" was death to the man only. Similarly, verses 23-24 involved mutually consenting adultery and both the man and woman were guilty of death. The critic cherrypicked the verses without the crucial ones actually involving rape in between, in other words. Deuteronomy 22:25 But if a man find a betrothed damsel in the field, and the man force her, and lie with her: then the man only that lay with her shall die: 26 But unto the damsel thou shalt do nothing; there is in the damsel no sin worthy of death: for as when a man riseth against his neighbour, and slayeth him, even so is this matter: 27 For he found her in the field, and the betrothed damsel cried, and there was none to save her. 28 If a man find a damsel that is a virgin, which is not betrothed, and lay hold on her, and lie with her, and they be found; 29 Then the man that lay with her shall give unto the damsel's father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife; because he hath humbled her, he may not put her away all his days. The inference is that Moses' commandment in Deuteronomy 21 was supported by God which is nowhere stated. Actually Moses by giving the commandment directly disobeyed God's original command not to make a covenant with the Canaanites or have relationships with their descendants. (Exodus 23:32, 34:11-17; Deuteronomy 7:2-4, 20:16-18) Moses' disobedience was so great that God shortly after this punished Moses by not letting him enter the Promised Land. (Deuteronomy 32:51) Moses similarly disobeyed God by allowing Israelites to divorce their wives, which as Jesus pointed out was contrary to what God intended. (Mark 10:4-12) Jesus if asked about this would likely have said the same thing, that this was a case of Moses disobeying God's commandments. Moses had a history of disobeying God as far back as the burning bush, when God repeatedly told Moses to go to Pharaoh, and Moses first complained that he was a nobody, then complained Pharaoh wouldn't listen, argued he couldn't speak well, and finally just told God to go bother someone else. (Exodus 3:11-4:14)
  17. Not to be nit picking but isn't it true that only Jews were let go after 7 years? [EX 21:2] I didn't think that applied to non-Jews [Leviticus 25:45-46]. Also, it was illegal to outright kill a slave, but beating them wasn't what was wrong. Let's take a look at one of the verses you mention: Exodus 21: 20 "If a man beats his male or female slave with a rod and the slave dies as a direct result, he must be punished." ....and the slave DIES as a direct result... Look at the very next verse, 21:21 But if the slave survives a day or two, he is not to be avenged, for the slave is his money. It isn't saying that beating a slave is wrong, it's saying beating one outright to the point where the slave dies right away. If I'm not mistaken, if the slave dies after a few days they would assume that the master didn't intend the kill the slave and the master was off the hook, no punishment. Disagreed. The Jubile for Hebrews was 7 years (Exodus 21) but there was a separate 50-year Jubile in Leviticus 25:8 that applied to everyone and freed all slaves regularly. And the word in Exodus 21:21 does not mean "survives" it means "recovers" or "continues" as translated by the KJV and NIV. The Hebrew word being translated is 'amad.' http://www.biblestudytools.com/lexicons/hebrew/kjv/amad.html Exodus 21:23-27, just a few verses later, makes clear that the penalty for killing others was the same harm done, eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth, so a master who killed his servant would be punished with death. It also makes clear that even minor harm resulting in deformity was to result in complete freedom from service. Thus Exodus 21:21 can only be referring to bruising that resulted in temporary damage not permanent injury. My complete analysis of the slavery issue will be here: http://www.bereawiki.com/wiki/Slavery
