  1. In this morning’s weekly brothers breakfast fellowship, someone brought up the parable of the so-called “Prodigal Son” and we had real good fellowship around some of the meaning of this parable. I had a few realizations and things I’d not seen well before regarding this story, and I thought it would be good to jot these down and share with y-all. The conversation had basically started around how great a salvation we have been given in Christ, that His all-efficacious blood is constantly available to us, and how there is no condemnation whatsoever for us in Christ --> and this is what the prodigal father demonstrated. Several discussed what this means to us practically, that is: reject all condemnation, but say “yes” to the conviction and leading of the Spirit (which always leads us back to our Father). Accordingly, the definition of “prodigal” was brought up . . . this word has a definition of “wastefully extravagant” or “extreme.” Well each of the three characters in this story were actually prodigal: One son wasted his being and inheritance to an extreme; the father had extravagant love; the other son was extremely legal. The father lavished his love on the returning son, and in no way condemned him. In fact, to me, this is the biggest part of this story – that the father was over-the-top with his love and longing for his son, and to celebrate his return without a hint of penalty mentioned towards his son. Just try to grasp the depths of the love shown here, even though this son had dissipated his being in debauchery and squandered all his inheritance! My my my, such “wastefully extravagant” and incomprehensible love!!! But something else regarding this son came out too, which I hadn’t really seen well before. He was humble and crawled back to his father. He was guilty of so much, and he knew it. But he was destitute and hungry, and selfishly wanted to be back in his father’s influence so that he didn’t starve. But with all this he had one redeeming attribute – he was humble with his father. Of course, the father was just so overjoyed to have his son back that none of what he had done mattered . . . the father loved his son unconditionally regardless. And then there was the other son. He was the one who had been extremely faithful, stayed with the father and had behaved himself – he did what he thought was expected of him all those years. But he was furious that his brother, who had misbehaved in such an extreme way, would receive such extreme love from their father. In much self-centered pride he boastfully exclaimed, “Have I not been faithful all these years and did . . .!?” But the father wasn’t about to let that spoil the enjoyment of his other son returning and threw an extravagant feast for him. The Lord hates pride, but gives ear to the humble (regardless if the humble one has been living with swine). In this story there was one humble son and one full of pride. God resists the proud. May we always be humble before Him, realizing we are “but dust” and could never earn the price His love paid to redeem us. What a story of extremes, but the father’s extreme love wins the day!!! (One other thing I saw during the fellowship was this story is also an example of Israel and the gentile nations. Israel could say, “Lord have we not been faithful to You and done this and that to please You?” Meanwhile the gentiles were out there doing their pagan thing. But God loves us all, whether Jew or gentile. In Christ’s reconciling work, the two are made one --> one new man.)
  2. God is a Father, Jesus is not. God deals with elders who are overseers of families for this reason. We love Jesus as He is mercifully dealing with mankind and He teaches us daily. If we look for Him...He will be there doing something amazing, valiant or merciful. But we can still go to God, ask Him what issues He is dealing with on earth for mankind. These are important designations we can discover, which make our relationship with Creator more fluid in everyway. Amen.
  3. I would like to hear from others who relate to this life-long difficulty… Due to the physical and emotional ABSENCE of my earthly Dad (even though he was alive and usually only a phone call away) and no other caring substitute interested in my life, I seem to be incapable of truly believing and trusting that my Father God loves me unconditionally, and actually WANTS a relationship with me. I believe it in Faith because “the Bible tells me so” and sometimes I DO feel His love for me, but on a daily average, I don’t. I can barely comprehend that this Father - Creator and Sustainer of the Universe - actually wants ME in a close relationship with Him? I have NO frame-of-reference for this. (Which is a deep grief in itself). This lack of comprehension on an emotional level has seriously effected my spiritual growth, my whole life. And yes, I continue to pray for it!
  4. Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, I would like to know the revelation hidden in these two verses from any one who has carefully studied these two verses from the Hebrew texts. If you haven't done the reserch you may kindly suggest me some useful links where I can do my own research. The best explanation so far I found is Gill's Exposition. I understand these two verses reveal the process that the Christ, the Son of God passing through from the eternity past to the eternity future. Grace be with you.
  5. God Heals at the Gas Station! (Testimony) God loves to work with His children everywhere! Here is a testimony of just that; God working through His faithful servant to heal a man who was clearly in great pain at a GAS STATION of all places! How cool is that?! God is awesome! God bless you all, in Jesus' mighty name!
  6. Hello all. I'm very desperately in need of some advice on something that I have difficulty telling anyone about. We're a devout Christian family and my family (husband, daughter and I) have my 68 year old dad living with us. My mum passed away 3 years ago and it was a very difficult situation and I thank God that Dad and I were there to give each other support at this time. My dad is a very well-respected member of our church which makes this situation very complicated and difficult. I have a sister who lives overseas with her family and we have discussed that at some point if dad ever needed to have a companion we wouldn't really mind as we know how difficult it might be dealing with the loneliness since mum passed away. However, in the last year or so I have become very suspicious of dad as he's been very protective of his mobile, often times making sure he deletes stuff if I have to do something like show him how to update software, etc. Anyway, I got a bit paranoid and saw texts that he's been sending a very close friend of mine who's married by the way (40 yrs old) texts saying things like "baby", "sweetie" "love you" and things like how nice she looked on a particular day, etc - you get the drift. However, I've never seen any texts that reciprocate the same feelings from this friend so not sure if she's just very careful or she too finds it awkward not knowing how to put him down easily as he uses the widower sympathetic card quite often. I really do not know what to make of this, and maybe I'm being paranoid and there's nothing to this, but this just seems so wrong and deceitful. Especially when he criticises my husband for every fault of his (that is another long story and my husband has made some huge mistakes but is on the right path now). My mum did tell me that he did womanise during his younger days when he was married, and I wonder if that story's playing with my head as well. The first thought that came to mind when I saw these texts 5 days ago was anger, resentment and just a sense of despair. How do you confront your dad with this kind of information? He lost mum, and if I were making this all up in my head then he'd be so distraught. So then, I started feeling suicidal as I felt there was no way out but then realised that that wasn't the solution. I needed to get this off my chest to lessen the burden and get some advice. I wanted to tell my sister but she stays so far away and I didn't want her to get emotional and angry and feeling unable to do anything from so far. And I can't tell my friends, or church or work as this is so embarrassing. So I've come here after a bit of searching on the net and stumbled upon this site. So yes, any advice would be really appreciated. All I can do is pray about this and turn to the Lord for help but I don't seem to get any answers as I'm just filled with anger and resentment. Thanks so much. Blessings.
  7. Why Trinity ? God is of 3 persons ... Father, Son, Holy Spirit. Did anyone wonder why He is of 3 persons ? God has the power to split Himself into many persons ... Why not 4 ... 5 ... ... ... 1,345,654 ... infinity ?
  8. Running Away Based on the story of the lost sons and loving father from Luke 15:11-32. Adapted from “The Jesus Storybook Bible” by Sally-Lloyd-Jones. I didn’t think the story was quite complete so the text in { bold } are my edits and additions. --------- Jesus Told this story about {the younger son } who ran away: Once upon a time, there {were two sons and their} dad. Now one day, the boy gets to thinking, “Maybe if I didn’t have my dad around telling me what is good for me all the time, I’d be happier. He’s spoiling my fun,” he thinks. “Does my dad really want me to be happy? Does my dad really love me?” This {younger} son never thought of that before. But suddenly he doesn’t know anymore. So the {younger} son goes to his father and says, “Dad, I’m better off without you. I can look after myself. Just give me my share of your money.” His father is sad but he won’t force his {younger} boy to stay. So he gives his son what he wants. The {younger} son takes the money and goes on a long, long journey to a far off country. And everything’s wonderful and perfect – for a while. He can go wherever he wants, do whatever he wants, be whoever he wants. He is the boss, he is free! Sometimes he gets a strange, hungry, homesick feeling inside his heart, but then he just eats more, or drinks more, or buys more clothes, or goes to more parties until it goes away. But soon his money runs out – and so do his friends. He ends up getting the only job he can find: Feeding pigs. One day he is so hungry and so desperate he even tries some piggy food – “What am I doing” he says suddenly, as if he has woken from a nightmare. He spits – YUCK! – all of it – ICK! – out of his mouth. “My father is rich and here I am – in a pig sty, eating pig food!” He wipes his mouth and dusts himself off. “I’m going home!” And he starts for home, he begins to worry. “Dad won’t love me anymore. I’ve been to bad. He won’t want me for his son anymore.” So he practices his I’m-Sorry-Speech-I’ll-Pay-You-Back. {He thought “I’ll simply work for my dad until I pay him back. Maybe I can live with the neighbors.}” All this time, what he doesn’t know is that, day after day, his dad has been standing on his porch, straining his eyes, looking into the distance, waiting for his son to come home. He just can’t stop loving him. He longs for the sound of his boy’s voice. He can’t be happy until he gets him back. The {younger} son is still a long way off, but his dad sees him coming. What will the dad do? Fold his arms and frown? Shout, “That’ll teach you!” and “Just you wait, young man!” No. That’s not how this story goes. {The dad was waiting!} The dad leaps off the porch, races down the hill, through the gap in the hedge, up the rod. Before his {younger} son can even {finish} his I’m-Sorry-Speech-I’ll-Pay-You-Back-Speech, his dad runs to him, throws his arms around him, and can’t stop kissing him. {The dad hugged him tight and said very loudly “I love you my son!” Then he told people to help get him ready.} “Let’s have a party!” his dad shouts. “My {younger} boy’s home. He ran away. I lost him – but now I have him back! {Here is a ring of the family that I place on his finger so nobody has any doubts! This is my son!}” Jesus told them, “God is like the dad who couldn’t stop loving his boy. And people are like the son who said, “Does my dad really want to be happy?” Jesus told people this story to show them what God is like. And to show people what they are like. So they could know, however far they ran, however well they hid, however lost they were – it wouldn’t matter. Because God’s children could never run too far, or be too lost, for God to find them. {God’s love would save them!} {Then Jesus spoke about the older son. While all the celebrating of the younger son was going on the older son came home. This dad also had an older son who did good things – he worked the fields of his father and did what his father told him to do. The older son came to the house and asked one of his father’s servants “What is going on? What’s all the fuss about?” The servant said “Your younger brother is safe and has come home! Your dad is throwing a huge party!” This made the older brother very mad. He would not come in. This saddened his dad a lot. So the dad came out to talk to the older son and said: “Come in and see your brother! He’s come home!” The older son yelled at his dad saying “All these years I’ve served you. I never dishonored you and you didn’t ever throw ME a party this big! As soon as this rebellious son who has wasted what you gave him comes home you not only receive him back with a big hug but throw him the biggest party this town has ever seen! Haven’t I earned a big party too?” The dad calmly said: “You have been with me all these years. I love you. You can’t earn my love I simply choose to love you. What I have is yours. It is good for us to celebrate your brother returning home and the reunion of our family. Your brother left and was lost to us – he chose his own path.” And then in an excited voice the dad continued: “But now he’s back and so I threw a party.” So Jesus told this second part of the story to help the people see they couldn’t earn God’s love by simply doing good things. } ------ What are your thoughts?
  9. First the definition: prod·i·gal adjective 1. wastefully or recklessly extravagant: prodigal expenditure. 2. giving or yielding profusely; lavish (usually followed by of or with ): prodigal of smiles; prodigal with money. Second, what are your thoughts on this passage? Who do you relate to more? Luke 15:11-32 11 Then He said: “A certain man had two sons. 12 And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the portion of goods that falls to me.’ So he divided to them his livelihood. 13 And not many days after, the younger son gathered all together, journeyed to a far country, and there wasted his possessions with prodigal living. 14 But when he had spent all, there arose a severe famine in that land, and he began to be in want. 15 Then he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed swine. 16 And he would gladly have filled his stomach with the pods that the swine ate, and no one gave him anything. 17 “But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger! 18 I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you, 19 and I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants.”’ 20 “And he arose and came to his father. But when he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him. 21 And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight, and am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ 22 “But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring out the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet. 23 And bring the fatted calf here and kill it, and let us eat and be merry; 24 for this my son was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ And they began to be merry. 25 “Now his older son was in the field. And as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing. 26 So he called one of the servants and asked what these things meant. 27 And he said to him, ‘Your brother has come, and because he has received him safe and sound, your father has killed the fatted calf.’ 28 “But he was angry and would not go in. Therefore his father came out and pleaded with him. 29 So he answered and said to his father, ‘Lo, these many years I have been serving you; I never transgressed your commandment at any time; and yet you never gave me a young goat, that I might make merry with my friends. 30 But as soon as this son of yours came, who has devoured your livelihood with harlots, you killed the fatted calf for him.’ 31 “And he said to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and all that I have is yours. 32 It was right that we should make merry and be glad, for your brother was dead and is alive again, and was lost and is found.’” Edit: Reference is to Luke 15 not Matthew 15. I apologize.
