"Right Division"

I wonder what people think of "Right Division"? It is a movement I have only recently come across, and as with all such innovations I am rather wary. For one thing, I have never heard of a convincing explanation for the division of scriptures on such lines, just an assumption that it should be done.

From what I know (and I'm sure there's more to it than this) they divide Paul's epistles into Prison and non-Prison. The Prison epistles are specifically for us Gentiles and the others are specifically for Jews I believe. It's a form of Dispensationalism.

"Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." (2 Tim.3:16,17, and 2 Tim.2:15).

I believe the concept or principle is to separate (aka divide) out what we believe to pertain to modern times and that which doesn't. It seems to me to be yet another way to cherry pick what we chose to believe and live by while ignoring the rest. It's essentially trying to make the Bible and it's teachings fit our lives rather than us having to conform to the Bible's teachings. While the proponents of this doctrine say they believe that all words have value to us, they believe not all the words pertain to us base on the day and age. I believe this line of thinking is dangerous and done in self interest rather than piety. IMO this only encourages people, such as gays, to pick and chose what they will and wont listen to. Yet another sign of itching ears wanting to be tickled.

Yes, I had the same impression - it's chopping the Bible up into bits as it suits one....

the guy who was expounding it was against all sorts of things too, like:

attending church

any Bible but KJV

any special days like Pentecost

denominations

gifts of the Spirit

any healing

Israel and all things Jewish

a day of rest, whether Saturday or Sunday

Christian music

Christian conferences

etc etc

"Rightly dividing"? We believe that the Holy Spirit is saying, though Paul, that although all Scripture is for us, it is not all about us. That is, not all of it is about Christians living in the world today. In other words, we must correctly apportion scripture so that we apply to us only what should apply to us. Most Christian churches go along with this, to a certain extent.

Sort of a pick and choose faith? And um... My church does not go along with this!

I believe that all scripture was given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3:16-17) To try and use His words otherwise goes against His word.

I would be very wary of such an approach to biblical study.
