Unusual "cure" for the flu

I received an email with an interesting way to combat the flu. Now, I'm not wishing ill upon my family, but if one of us gets the flu I just might try this.

This is the email:

A friend of mine told me a story about how when he was a kid he was in the hospital & near dying. His Italian grandmother came to the hospital & told a family member to go buy her a large onion & a new pair of white cotton socks. She sliced the onion open then put a slice on the bottom of each of his feet & put the white cotton socks on him. In the morning when he awoke they removed the socks. The slices of onion were black & his fever was gone. The following story that someone sent to me might have some truth in it & we are going to try this this winter.

In 1919 when the flu killed 40 million people there was this Doctor that visited the many farmers to see if he could help them combat the flu. Many of the farmers and their family had contracted it and many died.

The doctor came upon this one farmer and to his surprise, everyone was very healthy. When the doctor asked what the farmer was doing that was different the wife replied that she had placed an unpeeled onion in a dish in the rooms of the home, (probably only two rooms back then). The doctor couldn't believe it and asked if he could have one of the onions and place it under the microscope. She gave him one and when he did this, he did find the flu virus in the onion. It obviously absorbed the bacteria, therefore, keeping the family healthy.

Now, I heard this story from my hairdresser in AZ. She said that several years ago many of her employees were coming down with the flu and so were many of her customers. The next year she placed several bowls with onions around in her shop. To her surprise, none of her staff got sick. It must work.. (And no, she is not in the onion business.)

The moral of the story is, buy some onions and place them in bowls around your home. If you work at a desk, place one or two in your office or under your desk or even on top somewhere. Try it and see what happens. We did it last year and we never got the flu.

If this helps you and your loved ones from getting sick, all the better. If you do get the flu, it just might be a mild case..

Whatever, what have you to lose? Just a few bucks on onions!!!!!! !!!!!!!!

Now there is a P. S. to this for I sent it to a friend in Oregon who regularly contributes material to me on health issues. She replied with this most interesting experience about onions:

I don't know about the farmers story...but, I do know that I contacted pneumonia and needless to say I was very ill...I came across an article that said to cut both ends off an onion put one end on a fork and then place the forked end into an empty jar...placing the jar next to the sick patient at night. It said the onion would be black in the morning from the germs...sure enough it happened just like that...the onion was a mess and I began to feel better.

Another thing I read in the article was that onions and garlic placed around the room saved many from the black plague years ago. They have powerful antibacterial, antiseptic properties.

I heard that talking one garlic oil pill and two elderberry supplement pills a day go a long way in prevention of getting the flu.

My grandmother told me that she used to boil a big pot of onions and when they cooled sufficiently made a plaster out of them and put them on her babies who had croup or a cough.... I've never done that. But... when we were little, if we had colds and were coughing, we had Vick's vapo-rub rubbed on our feet and then white socks on. Didn't cough all night... My grandmother used that stuff by that vat!!!!

Hmmm....... I am never one to contest home remedies, because I am sure some work. And I sure love onion rings.

I've heard of the Vapor Rub on the feet but haven't had a chance to try it yet. My family just won't get sick! I guess that's a good thing, but I am going to try the onions as soon as someone gets the chills. I sent it to my step-daughter. She has 3 little ones who are always fighting one bug or another, so I hope she tries it and lets me know.

Hmmm....... I am never one to contest home remedies, because I am sure some work. And I sure love onion rings.

Recently, while having lunch with one of my brothers - we discussed how we grew up and things that were so funny about our childhood. We both acknowledged that it's a wonder we survived - but, survive we all did!!! We had a large extended family of grandparents, great aunts and cousins who lived with us. It was a challenge to the Southern women in our household when someone came down with a 'bug'.... These women swung into action like a well-oiled machine. Kettles of water were put on the huge oil stove in my grandmother's dining room to vaporize the room (who knew that this actually worked); We were greased with menthol vapor rubs, red flannel cloths were affixed by safety pins to pajamas to hold the "vapors" in. Heating pads were warmed in my grandmother's 4 poster bed (if you were sick, you had to sleep with Grammee)... If you were coughing - there was my Uncle Charlie's favorite mixture of rye whiskey, lemon juice and honey - usually after this concoction you never coughed ... or even woke up until the next morning. We breathed a steam of spearmint water and menthol. We consumed enough beef broth to float a ship. My brother and I couldn't bring ourselves to discuss what transpired if you had an upset stomach.... to this day - I cannot stand the smell of paragoric ...

My grandmother had a favorite "sick" food she called Graveyard Stew. She said that no matter how sick or unable to hold anything down, this was always good:

2 pieces of toast - toasted in the oven so that they were black and about ready to burst into flames. Put them into a shallow bowl and pour scalded milk over them. Put in a thick pat of real butter and lots of pepper.

Personally I always would rather be sick, but she always at this.

Grammee and the Aunts had custard and tapioca and the most amazing french toast - but you had to suffer all sorts of indignities prior to getting solid food..

this is just a bit sad, haha. i would hate for the onion thing to be true, because onions kill my eyes and haha if m mom found out about this i would have them in my socks!

I'm hoping my daughter gets the flu before my husband (truth is I really pray neither get sick at all ) because she will put up with this "cure" better than my husband.
