To be recognized by the Lord. Worthy of approval.

Spiritual gifts were gifts from the Lord. There were a variety of gifts imparted by God (1 Cor ch 12). Paul was telling them to desire or want those gifts but that there was a greater gift that He wanted them to have. This gift is love. He expounds on this in chapters 13 and 14 following. In Gal 5:22 Paul calls love the fruit of the spirit and lists it first.

I think My question would be better, what does it mean to you, and how can we apply this to our lives.

Those verses tell me to let love be grounded in everything love must come first in all things, and to eagerly seek after spiritual gifts. This is something that I feel is needed in the body.

How many believers eagerly seek after spiritual gifts for the edification of the body.

The Corinthians were rather a wild bunch, and seemed to carry their competiveness to extremes, while also bringing elements of their former worldly ways on display within the Body....Paul has some serious problems on his hands...but here he is carefully weaving a combination of teaching, admonishment and exhortation...where he praises their good points (enthusiasm and zeal for the gifts of the Spirit) and directing them how better to channel this desire so that it is not merely for their own benefit, but for the Body....and that their motivation can be improved through understanding what love is all about.

I absolutely agree with the thrust of what you are saying Joshua, that love must be our grounding....I really don't believe Paul is in any way trying to negate everything he has been teaching, by trying to place love above the gifts of the Spirit, as some might try and explain...rather it is sandwiched there to bring balance and structure to what he is exhorting them to do....it is the platform on which the gifts should be built/learnt/desired.

Likewise I find that for myself these Scriptures are telling me to be zealous for the gifts of the Holy Spirit for the benefit of the Body, and that my motivation must come from a heart of love, and a character that is determined to be used as a servant of the L-rd for the Body....Like everybody else, I am an individual with my own strengths and weaknesses...and it is very easy to get in a comfort zone and take a back-seat and just go along for the ride....but Paul is at pains to encourage us as individuals to serve the whole...whether we are an eye or a toe...we all have our place.

The emphasis is to 'earnestly desire'...we are exhorted to seek to be a vessel of the Holy Spirit so that others may be encouraged and exhorted from the L-rd, or whatever is the will of the Spirit....to get to this place, we need to make sure our walk is righteous, and our motivations are pure...and the only real positive competition is where we try to outdo each other in our service to the L-rd because of His love in us for the Brethren...and this does not always come easy.

What does it mean to desire spiritual gifts to you?

1 Corinthians 12:31 But earnestly desire the best gifts. And yet I show you a more excellent way.

1 Corinthians 14:1 Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.

zēloō1) to burn with zeal

a) to be heated or to boil with envy, hatred, anger

1) in a good sense, to be zealous in the pursuit of good

b) to desire earnestly, pursue

1) to desire one earnestly, to strive after, busy one's self about him

2) to exert one's self for one (that he may not be torn from me)

3) to be the object of the zeal of others, to be zealously sought after

c) to envy

1 Corinthians 12 outlines these very well. Read the King James carefully regarding this.

There are 9 spiritual gifts, and they are supernatural powers granted to those who have the Holy Spirit. All Christians are able to manifest them.

They are:

Speaking in Tongues (the ability to speak in a language you do not know, sometimes Earthen, sometimes celestial- this is extremely cool)

Interpretting Tongues (turning that garbled speaking back into a langauge you understand)

Wisdom (supernaturally being told what to do in a situation)

Knowledge (supernaturally being given information about a situation)

Discerning of Spirits (supernaturally telling if someone is a fellow Christian posessing Holy Spirit or if someone is possibly posessed or born of Satan)

Healing (self-explanatory)

Faith (self-explanatory)

Prophecy (like speaking in tongues but initially in a language you understand)

Miralces (the "necessary and proper" clause)

Believe that you can do them, and you will. Speaking in tongues is a good one to start out. Just start moving your lips and let spirit give you utterance of foreign words. It's possible someone with linguistic background may recognize them if they are Earthen.

How do you read the following?:

1 Corinthians 12:11 (New King James Version)

11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.

It makes no difference if we believe we can, what makes the difference is if He gives us the gift or not. It is the Holy Spirit who decides, not man.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
