Why do atheists attack christianity?

I have spoken to a lot of atheists. Many of them were brought up in christian homes but after studying the word and failing to find this God they really began to search for answers. Most that i have met know the bible better than the christians i know. They see religion as a disease that should be eradicated because it is viewed as primitive. Notions such as passing the sin onto an innocent third party is immoral because it removes accountability from the individual. Another one is using God as a safety blanket. I have heard many many reasonings. If these had answers that were straightforward we wouldn't be in this continuous struggle.

I submit that when it comes to how we treat others, there are only two ways to interpret the Bible:

1. Reading what it says and accepting what is written; or

2. Distorting what is says for personal gain.

The oft-stated objection that it can say whatever you want it to say is simply neglegent.

Who is to say who is reading it with their heart and who isn't? And we can't disregard the undeniable influence society has had on people interpretation's of the Bible through-out the years. Not to mention, again, there are many different denominations of Christianity with many different interpretations.

Certainly there are interpretations that differ and certainly that has a great impact on society, but it doesn't make the plain meaning of the Biblical text any harder to interpret or demonstrate.

Take homosexuality for example, some say Jesus didn't care while others claim it to be an abomination! 50 years ago it would have been the latter, now it's becoming "ok". The plain meaning of the bible varies from person to person, so there isn't anything plain about it. Demonstrating is left to the individual who interpreted it so you will have people being martyrs through self sacrifice or killing their demon possessed mother to save her.

The answers are straightforward - you just don't see them.

1 Corinthians 1:18-21 KJV 18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. 20 Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? 21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.

Also see Psalms 14. God's Word has endured these thousands of years, and it will endure forever - just as God promised. Countless millions testify of the Truth, so I don't see your unbelief as wisdom - rather the opposite. You're not the first to have the silly idea that Christians should be eradicated. That's been tried and it will be tried again without success. The end of the story is in God's Word, and it will come to pass most perfectly according to God's Perfect Time. If you die in your sins without Christ, your future is also foretold in the Holy Bible. There won't be any atheists in hell, but it will be too late. Who knows - tomorrow might be too late.

Its true the popularity of christianity as well as these multiple "sects" so its most common to want to target christianity yet its also just so christians are the only ones willing to defend it. most other religions usually ignorantly run off or try to "convert" rather then reveal the truth. Athiest usually play off of this willing to play their game style to make business and profit off of it kinda. but there are other reasons just as so.

You're probably right that atheists think Christians use God as a 'safety blanket'. They are going to wish they had the Lord to hold on to as they go head first into that pit.

By contrast, Jesus died for our sins and we're commanded "If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone" (Romasn 12:18), "for the weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds" (2 Cor. 10:4).

We have no scriptural justification to physically harm people, as Jesus said: "My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jews. But now my kingdom is from another place" (John 18:36).

The text is clear, but people are corrupt and will ignore the clarity of the text to promote what they want.

There are certainly atheists who seem to enjoy either a good intellectual discussion, or wish to go to court over what seem to be trivial issues. I am not convinced they are all looking for a fight, but they all seem to be very aware of whether their rights are violated. I tend to believe that we should not force people to pray, but we should be willing to share our experiences.

They seem to attack all religions. Christianity is first on the list because this is a Christian country.

Rather than fight with them, we may wish to say, "We will not force you to agree there is a God, and we will not force you to pray. We would like to convince you." The Lord seems to handle the situation better than we do. I would not wish Madelyn Murray O'Hair 's (a noted atheist) life and death on anybody. We should regard these folks with compassion rather than as enemies.

Yes this is your interpretation of the text. People are able to twist an interpretation, finding reasonings or other scripture to support their view. I also agree with your view on this but there are many who would oppose it.
