While I like the UCG and have family in this church they still adhere to Armstrongs model of end times. They leave out the Assyrian and Egyptian empires, fail to acknowledge Rev. 17 and the 'beasts' and that Rome was conquered by the Ottomans which would make them (rome) the beast that was when John was in his vision, the beast that comes after that was islam and the last beast mirrors that. The two horns and beast that comes out of the sea represents the wounding of the seventh beast and is the 'whore' that rides the beast back until the beast (islam) who receives power from satan then throws the woman off and burns her. We give way too much power to a revised roman empire, its the 'western' powers that are riding the beast right now and has been for so many years trying to make the middle east and islamic nations more like us and they let us until they were able to gather their strength back. And the way the EU seems to be going they will also be in economic straights just as we will be here, I have serious doubts that rome is going to rule the world again but can see islam has used rome to rebuild just as it has the rest of the world. But sorry to go off topic sorta.

I soo agree with that! My thinking is that prophecy is better seen and understood after it happens! I really enjoy talking about it, seeing how things could fit although I do think that we can see certain things clearly just as the scribes, rabbis and others who knew the scriptures knew when the Messiah was to come and knew what needed to be seen etc. But as the angel said to Daniel, seal it up till the right time and when that happens I think for those who are earnestly seeking and studying we will be able to see it when He unseals it. Saying that I do think we can see the beasts for who they are, John in his vision said the first five were already gone and history shows us who they were, who the one was at that time, rome, and all we needed to do is see who came along toppled the roman empire and who 'conquered' the land and who also holds the land as hostage before He returns.

That's where it gets confusing, though.

No one toppled Rome, technically. And the land of Israel was controlled by the Holy Roman Empire, by the Byzantine Empire, by the Islamic Empire, (back and forth control), by the Ottoman Empire, by the British Empire . . . finally back to the Jews, but not all of Jerusalem is theirs.

I'm inclined to agree with that, neb. We just don't know but that doesn't stop millions from trying to figure it out. Including me; I know that somehow this stuff going on in the Middle East and Egypt is tied in but I'm not sure exactly how. It's a good sign that so many are noticing the signs though.

No one toppled Rome, technically. And the land of Israel was controlled by the Holy Roman Empire, by the Byzantine Empire, by the Islamic Empire, (back and forth control), by the Ottoman Empire, by the British Empire . . . finally back to the Jews, but not all of Jerusalem is theirs.

The roman empire was more than the roman church. Wasn't it the ottoman islamic empire that finally put the spread of westernized type of rule and values to a halt at least for awhile, and it was a combined effort of nations (europe)that finally stopped islam from moving and taking europe over. Europe was leaving them behind in wealth, in technologies and in doing so it was an expanded Europe not 'ruled' by the rcc or pope as well as other western expansions that took over and infiltrated the islamic way of life. That westernization is what brought the militant islam into being I believe. If the islam that is coming is truly the final beast it will have been 'ridden' or brought back to life by the system and we the 'west' has been 'guiding' those islamic nations ever since, we send aide to those nations, those who are part of that growth system immigrate to other countries and bring the sharia islamic ideology with them gaining ground in political circles. And if they are the final beast that will get power from satan himself what better ideology to rule over the masses than factions that clearly hate you and are willing to blow someones head off for their god. I could be completely wrong too! we just have to wait and see what happens with this new wind blowing through islam today see if they can bring it about and of course its God's plan and timing!

Yep.

Rome toppled Rome (if you get my drift). Just as some of the new "empires" will topple themselves in the future.

It is when this happens that others attack to pick up the pieces. Rome at the hight of her power could not be touched, but moral decline, depravity and greed from within toppled her.

History does repeat itself, and "Those who do not study history, are doomed to repeat it", holds true today as it did 2000 years ago.
