John's baptizm was for repentance. When you're baptized in the name of Jesus Peter tells us that we will receive the guift of the Holy Spirit. Note it does not say A guift FROM the Holy Spirit.

Acts 2:37-39

37 Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Brethren, what shall we do?" And Peter said to them, "Repent, and let each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. "For the promise is for you and your children, and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God shall call to Himself."

NASB

There is mention of John baptizing with water, but the one that follows will baptize with fire. I have not taken the time to decide for myself exactly what the fire baptizm is........

There is actually much evidence for the "empowerment" by the Holy Spirit as a separate experience to salvation.

This is probably the most fascinating article I have read about this subject (the Jewish roots of baptism by immersion).

Do you agree that there is more then one type of baptism spoken of in the bible?

Yes and no.

There were different baptisms, but today there is only one.

It is a Holy Spirit baptism that happens when we are baptized with water.

Remember these Biblical facts:

1. Jesus "received" the Holy Spirit when He was water baptized.

2. Jesus said that we must be born of water and the Spirit to enter heaven.

3. Titus 3:5 tells us that the Spirit washes us and regenerates us.

Those are just three examples.

According to scripture for the Christian there are 3 baptisms-we are baptized by the Holy Spirit into the body of Christ-this happens at the moment of salvation-you will find this in 1 corinthians-"for by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body".

We are baptized in water as a public declaration of our faith-in the Name of the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit.

Then either before water baptism (like the Gentiles in Acts 10) or after water baptism (like the Ephesians in Acts 19) Jesus will baptize us in the Holy Spirit-the evidence that that has occured in our lives is speaking in other tongues as the Spirit enables. :t2: (Acts 2:4, Acts 10:46, Acts 19:6) This speaking in tongues is not to be confused with the "gift" of tongues-which is for the church gathered together and must be interpreted so that the church can be built up)
