I thanked my Mother many times after I was grown for the discipline she provided!

That is why I am questioning things. I don't agree with the judge's ruling as is stated, but something sure is odd.
Guest
Child Abuse is not an effective method of garnering good behaviour from children. What child abuse? Proverbs 23:13-14 teaches "Do not withhold correction from a child, for if you beat him with a rod, he will not die. You shall beat him with a rod, and deliver his soul from hell." I'm not advocating hitting a child with anything besides the open palm of the hand, or on the face. But the lack of discipline within the American family has directly resulted in the most rudest, conceited, demanding and unaccountable generation that has ever been described in the history of our country. And the parents and teachers are directly responsible and I believe that the Lord will hold them accountable for not raising these children "in the way they should go." Agreed; it's unlikely a female parent did that much damage with her open hand.

Define child abuse. Shiloh62 gave a good definition. There is someone I know who spanked her child. Every time she spanked her child, he seemed more and more distant. One time he asked in the middle of the spanking, "Why are you doing this?!" To which she replied "Because I love you". He replied with a resounding "No you don't! Beatings are never loving, or at the least, an incredibly counter-productive way to show it. When a child is abused like that, it associates child abuse with love for their children in them from an early, early age. People who are abused as children, end up growing up and abusing their children. It teaches them that when people disagree with hem, that violence is a way to bring them in line. There are methods that are not violent, that produce far better changes in behaviour, without the downside.

It can be argued that there are better ways to spank than another. My dad gave us a strong whack on the rear with his belt - boy did that sting! But one was all that was needed. Then he hold us in his arms, pray with us, and affirm his love.
