Book of John...What?

Hello Everyone,

So I am reading my Bible on my Iphone and currently I am reading the book of John. Right as I am finished with Chapter 7 verse 52, My Bible app has this note that states:

[The earliest manuscripts do not include 7:53-8:11]

What's everyones opinion on this? What gives?

The quick answer is : There is more then one way to translate the bible. Some translate scripture using the most accepted writings, known as the Majority Text. Some use the text that had been received since 1512, known as the Textus Recepius. Other used only what is a text most closely approximating the original, known as the Critical Text. There are more ways, but these are the more common ways.

If you are really serious in finding and answer, you can research these three (or all there is) to find what others say, but beware, it is an endless hole and may confuse or sway your faith.

Earliest EXISTING manuscripts...

There have been attempts in history to dilute the scriptures to suit the desires of humanist believers. Even in the time of the epistles being written some (gnostics) tried to foist upon the Church and the scriptures that Jesus did not actually come in body but was merely a manifested spirit... and the Apostle John and the Apostle Paul spoke against this fervently.

1 John 1:1-5 (NIV)

1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life.

2 The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us.

3 We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.

4 We write this to make our joy complete.

5 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.

Some manuscripts may omit certain verses of insignificance and they may be older than other texts that survived to this date but that doesn't mean they were the oldest back when they were written or that they are the authority for being older in the 21st Century CE.

If a particular point of scripture that does not exist in older texts, look for it elsewhere in scripture. Some cults will take a verse that falls into this category and say "See! See here it says Jesus is not God because this verse is not even in the older manuscripts..." So, rather than argue that point about the verse appearing or not, I use all the other texts that affirm Jesus is in fact God incarnate. And I show them in their own Bibles and they usually find some excuse to leave and never come back...

Many many many have tried to undermine and undercut the Bible. Not to worry. The Bible always s\\withstands these tests.
