I assume the languages would only be current ones in use otherwise who would they benefit ?

My tongues benefit me. (1 Cor. 14:4 - "One who speaks in a tongue edifies himself....")

I'm not following your train of thought.

Some believers think tongues are always earthly languages. For this group has anyone checked and verified their tongues are an earthly language ?

Is it even possible to do this? One would have to record every incident of speaking in tongues and then have a means to filter it through all the known tongues that ever existed. This seems to be an impossible task.

I assume the languages would only be current ones in use otherwise who would they benefit ? Once again I am only speaking about people who believe tongues are only earthly languages.

Yes it would be a very difficult task but not impossible. A linguist might have a fair idea where to start.

Since you have set a parameter upon your replies, I will bow out because I believe there are also heavenly tongues. Good luck with your question.

I am not trying to create debate about the types/uses of tongues.

Some people believe tongues are earthly languages and they are for use as witness to people who speak a different language. In this case it is only logical that the language is currently in use.

Would you agree ?

This doesn't line up well with speaking tongues and interpretation in church though.

I was born in the middle east and then moved to canada when I was still young but I know a little bit of arabic.. yesteday when I was in church we were praying for someone who was leaving on a missions trip and this one girl next to me (who is Ethiopian) bursted out in tounges in Arabic! True story!

Someone has actually went to a professor of language study and gave them a recording of themselves speaking in tounges to analyze where and when their language was spoken, you can watch it here...

as someone else said too tounges are not always earthly langues as written in the scripture in 1 Corinthians 13:1

Excellent,

Thanks.

I speak in tounges but i don't know what language it is.. I imagine it is some sort of east european language or african language but i now clue what it is. I also can't speak long sentences like that woman in the video but i just recently started speaking in tounges (aprox. january of this year) so i imagine that will come in time. If you noticed though on the video that woman found out her tounges was an ancient form of french from the previous century which is not spoken anymore. So although it may sound like gibberish to some they are all real languages.

Creflo-dollar the tv evangelist said once in his program that at one time when a friend from nigeria was visiting his family they heard him speak in tounges and leaned over tohis wife taffy and said to her "i didn't know your husband could speak our language"... However creflo said that all those years he spoke it he did not know what it was and he just spoke it in faith.

I believe that tongues can be used for witnessing, as it did at Pentecost. However, 1 Cor. 14 expresses other uses for tongues. So, no, I don't believe witnessing is the only purpose of tongues.

I'm not an expert at languages, but I believe I have spoken in more than one language. At least, the sounds are different. I have no idea why it changes.

The video was quite interesting, but I dont believe all tongues are only earthy languages.

And also, how do you "teach" someone to speak in tongues? I also saw something similar about people "teaching" others to prophesy. IMO it just seems wrong, your either blessed with the gift or your not.

Well, the prophecy thing is a whole other ball of wax, because one has to learn to discern their own thoughts and impressions from what the Holy Spirit actually gave.

The only teaching for how to speak in tongues that I know of is how to express the faith to get started. Not everyone starts spontaneously - most of us have our rational minds in the way that needs to be overcome.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Daniel: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 3

      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this study, I'll be focusing on Daniel and his picture of the resurrection and its connection with Yeshua (Jesus).

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
