(Luke 18:22 KJV) Now when Jesus heard these things, he said unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me.

I wonder what we would do if Jesus said this to us? I wonder what the rich man's friend's thought when they talked about it later. "He told you to do what?"

In a way, He has said this to us. Of course He hasn't told us to sell all of our possessions, but He did say if we love Him we'll obey Him. He did say that loving Him would cost us, and it would be a high price. Modern Christianity has turned into a "feel good" theology (much of it has anyway). We've forgotten that we aren't here for our own comfort. We're here for His glory alone. I don't know what part of "crucify your flesh" we don't understand.

I have said many times my oldest son has the wisdom of one in their forties.....

people think i am saying he is beyond his years.... that is not what I am refering to....

those in their 40's are behind.... infact, my oldest son is behind where he ought to be as far as the wisdom goes....

I was raised in a very legalistic atmosphere where this, too, was taboo. Like Irish said, it had to do with "turning the church into a marketplace".

At our church, the Youth do fundraisers to get $$ for their trips and stuff. But the church, in general, doesn't do them. Actually, I never heard of a church doing that.

I don't have a problem with them at all - as long as they do not go on inside of the church. Guess some of that stayed with me. I think it's inappropriate to sell stuff in church. Not only having the merchandise there, but kids shouldn't be allowed to carry their papers around and acost people. JMO.

I went to a Catholic church in town last year for a performance our school's chorus was putting on. When I walked in the foyer, there were a couple of tables of stuff to sell. It was a total turn off. I had never seen that in a church before and was shocked. Not picking on the Catholic church here, it's just that that is where I saw it. I thought it was tacky. JMO.

I know at my church that we mostly do fundraisers that are for the church---we hold a yearly fish fry for the benevolent ministry, the youth have periodic fundraisers to earn the money for their yearly trip to Green Lake, as well as other activities, etc, etc. I think the only fundraisers that we allow that are not for the church are for the boy scout and girl scout troup that our church sponsors.
