Smoking is not a sin

Now that i have that out the way, here's my (short) story.

I smoked for 40 years, because I enjoyed it, because it calmed me after "incidents" that we called "contacts", and because I enjoyed it (still would)...

Just over a month ago I was at a friends house for dinner on a Saturday night, and we smoked, had a glass of wine or two, and chatted and just generally hung out.

South was away (I did not smoke in front of her she hates it), and I was wondering what I could give her for her birthday when she returned in a months time, and I though, the best gift I could give her would be to stop smoking. Now remember I had not thought about giving up, did not feel any dire need, do not think it is a sin, and enjoyed it.

So when I got home on Saturday night I said to Jesus, "my motive for stopping is South, but i know i don't have the will power to just stop Lord, I am addicted, and I enjoy it. But by Your power alone, because i cannot, I pray that You help me to stop".

I woke up on Sunday morning. No craving at all, nothing, nada, zilch, zip. No mood swings, cravings, shakes, nothing. It is as if I never smoked, do not know what smoking is. Not one craving around friends who smoke, nothing. No craving after incidents at work. Nothing.

All Glory to my Amazing God, He preformed this miracle.

Because He did, because I could not.

I wish i could say I suffered, but I did not, it was easy.

Because of Jesus, and only because of Jesus.

That was over a month ago.

i was wondering when you were going to get around to telling your story! i'm so happy for you, and for south! i'm sure a lot of people here will try to rain on the parade by insisting it is a sin. i'm with you, though. in and of itself, i don't think it is. that being said, as you know, i quit just over three years ago, (my motivation was the frequent price & tax hikes on smoking) and i also have to give God the glory!

I am very happy for you Fez! I would love to quit, but I don't believe it to be a sin either...I would just like a better quality of life, and to be a better witness. Alas, the time has not come yet for me, but it blesses me to hear your story, and know that with God all things are possible.

As for smoking being sin or not there is only one test it must pass and that being 'would God ever write a law against it?'

Mat 22:37-40 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second [is] like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

Let everyone be fully persuaded in their own minds.

I like to see the way a cigarrette burns and the smoke it creates. It is a reminder that of our own life which is short. We inhale smoke as we inhale sin. Stop smoking is like finding God and our life is tranformed.

And I will say it again, I liked smoking, I enjoyed it.

But because of Jesus, I no longer miss it.
