Blessings everyone!

This is very funny to me because I used to be a very wildly dressed girl since my youth...my tops could not be low enough,my skirts were never high enough.......I wore the skimpiest halter tops and the most midriff revealing hip huggers...I was in the world and I guess, obviously, seeking the approval of such......When Jesus came into my life and really began to transform me and renew my mind,I did not even think about it,the apparel I was wearing just did not appeal to me anymore.......the Lord put His Word deep in my heart and I just began to not just dress modestly but my heart and mind became modest....what was happening on the inside affected my outward appearance.....vanity began to fade away and there was much less of me because there was so much more of Jesus

I think in our hearts(in any culture)what is on the inside is what will determine what one wears

Just adding my take;

What is considered modest will vary from culture to culture. In Orthodox Judaism, wearing red is considered immodest. In others, dressing well is considered the norm. In some, it would be wrong to not wear some form of jewelry.

For 1 Tim 2, in that culture prostitutes braided their hair with gold. In other cultures during biblical times, pagan temple priestesses shaved their heads.

Amish dress in what they consider modest clothing, but in these modern times, they stand out tremendously.  Is it modest to dress so differently so as to stand out and attract attention?

I was thinking the same thing Q. Modesty will vary from culture to culture.

You bring up a good point about 1 Timm 2... Braided hair and shaved heads...

How would you answer this question in red? Curious. :help:

Is it modest to dress so differently so as to stand out and attract attention?

Dressing in a manner which is so different does attract attention.

Having grown up in a community which dresses different, the point is, I lived in the community so the manner of dress was common everyday dress. As the Amish say, it was plain. However, outside the community, it definitely drew attention. To those outside the community, it was anything but plain, or even modest. The differing clothes became a symbol of my difference. That can be good or bad.  Of course, teens thru 20's dress different then their parents to show individuality. It is a symbol of their difference.

In an Amish community, they are dressing modestly, but outside of the Amish community, they attract attention. Amish dress is anything but dressing modestly to 'English'. Christians live in the world but are not of the world. Living in the world, I think you adapt to what is 'modest' in that culture.

The Amish do not want to recognize our world. We are outsiders.Do you blame them?Look at our world. It is dark and evil.Look at the way women dress in our world.I would take Amish apparel anyday over what I see at the grocery store.Very scary :(

What I see in the world, are people who are lost and in great need of salvation. I see there is evil trying to make sure people remain lost, trying to convince them of all kinds of things are fun and make them free in order to keep them lost. At that point, I don't care how they dress.

When trying to appear modest, we are trying to appear modest to people around us. If I wore Amish clothes, and walked thru a mall, or into a church, I would likely draw a lot of attention. And curiosity. I would be approached by people who are curious and want to talk.

I am one who does not care what people and this world say about me.This has taken a very long time to get to this point. The English world is curious about the Amish world.Look at all the books that are being written about them, look at all the people who are touring Amish Country and

buying their goods.Although they forbid their pictures to be taken.Their are several issues with the Amish I feel are too legalistic. And their lack of knowing that they have a home in heaven when they die.Although that is usually the old order Amish.

If you see those with no clothes on in National Geographic it is because they live in the Jungle. That is the only why they know how to present themselves. No one sees them except creepy National Geographic photographers who want to capture the naked person living in the jungle.

Creepy?  Really?  Every N Geo photographer who happens to catch a person in the jungle sans clothes is creepy?  FYI, they are usually only naked from the waist up

So does that also mean that ALL artists, photographers and sculpters are also all creepy should they in some way render the human form as God intended?

After all, it was only AFTER the sin of disobedience that the occupants of the garden required clothes.

I think an awful lot of people might object to your rendition of creepy and that includes Christians who acknowledge and live by the admonition to dressing appropriately as a believer

I have seen many totally naked people of the jungle photographed in National Geographic. What is the point? That is like going to a naked beach fully clothed to gawk and take pictures of the naked.I do know people do this.I think that nudity in art should be avoided. Many of this world would not agree with me.

Could we refrain from cutting others down?

Yes, the Amish stand out to us, but they do not dress as they do to attract attention to themselves or to their bodies. There's a huge difference between someone dressing their culture and someone trying to make a show out of themselves.

Immodesty implies drawing sensual attention to yourself.

National Geographic are not pushing porn; they are showing a culture, and they mostly try to not expose private parts when taking pictures of such tribes.

LOL!

I work in some villages where young women walk around bare breasted because it has been their culture for hundreds of years.

Look up Zulu annual reed dance! Nothing is thought of it, and to me it is something completely natural. And FYI the reed dance is to celebrate purity and virginity, and many of the young women are Christians. (It used to be for the king to choose a bride, but no longer). The rest of the world might think it is creepy, and I am sure there are men who "enjoy" watching the celebration, but be under no illusion, it is simply cultural.

But I would be a bit surprised if one of the women from our church arrived "dressed' like that to a service.

It is a cultural thing mostly.

I wasn't going to comment in another 'modesty' thread, but I blame fez for inspiring my involvement. I agree with this completely. It seems that modesty is largely if not entirely culturally determined-- which in turn allows us to say something about the intentions of the people dressing in ways that they do. Suppose someone walks into church in a bathing suit (I think I am stealing this from either GE or fez...) here, it would be immodest because it's attention grabbing and so out of the norm as to be attention grabbing. Much skin, abnormally so, is being exposed. But suppose someone walks into a church service in a bathing suit-- one that is being held on a beach and everyone else is dresses similarly?

My mother grew up in a very conservative household with strict rules about wearing skirts, covering arms, etc. Her even wearing pants around was considered problematic, or wearing sleeveless things, anything which was even mildly low cut. I know this because I heard comments from my (now deceased) grandmother about it. The thing is, compared to other people in the place my mom lives she actually dresses pretty conservatively. To one group, not, to another group, yes. It's hard not to come to the conclusion this is a cultural thing, a matter of traditions.

If you are referring to me cutting others down nebula would you please tell me how I am doing that?

Their is a difference in the Amish because they dress in a way that is pleasing to God.Isn't that the way all Christians should dress?

I have read many, many National Geographic magazines and have seen many totally naked bodies. It is their culture.Leave them alone. If a magazine finds them interesting then leave out the totally naked pictures.I am sure their is another way to portray the tribes with their permission without disrespecting their bodies.

Greetings in Love,

I totally love the human body...God is Amazing How He Created us...And most of all-not in bondage any longer...I've lived on both sides of the fence...One side of the fence, totally, without Jesus, in the lust of my flesh; and on the other side of the fence, walking in The Spirit and not my flesh...Now I will say this...I've been pretty modest my whole life...didn't really see the need to show off my body...I was always told that I looked just as good coming as I did going...and that was fully clothed...Hahaha...

Some would interpret this differently but as I see it and have experienced this: there is no gender in the Spirit...There is no lust of the human body while in the Spirit...

Galatians 5:24-26 And those who are Christ's have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.

and

Galations 3:27-28 says that if we've put on Christ...there is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female...for we are all one in Christ Jesus...Whew...It just takes care of all the envy, jealousy...etc. etc. He sets us free from all that! There are literally some people that will not speak to the opposite sex...for fear of their flesh...but anyway...Used to I could not trust myself either at all period...But I can now...I just want to grow In The Lord!!! Hallallujah!!!

Love, NeedHim (That's my nickname, Hahaha)

Wasn't this topic talked about before? Something about women wearing dresses or pants or something?:crazy:  Im so confused.

But I don't want to dress Amish. :20:  And as for National Geographic, personally I do not think that the naked body is anything dirty or shameful. It is our own person issues that make it dirty or shameful. Adam and Eve walked naked around the garden until the snake came along.
