Hymm penned by hymnist Horatio Spafford and composed by Phillip Bliss.

 

Spafford lost his livelyhood with the Great Chicago Fire in 1871. He was a laywer in Chicago and had a lot of property that basically became worth pennies over night. He sent his family ahead to Europe as he was dealing with zoning problems in Chicago. His four daughters died as their ship, the SS Ville du Havre, collided with another sea vessell in the Atlantic. His wife was Anna, the only of his family to survive the ship wreck, sent him the now famous telegram, "Saved alone …".
 

Bliss called his tune Ville du Havre, in honor of the name of the stricken vessel.

My favorite hymn, thank you!  This is one of the most beautiful ever written and the words are fantastic!

 

We know that this Peace of God does not depend upon conditions in our lives, or circumstances, for hardships and heartaches will come.  It is the peace that passes all understanding and holds throughout the storm.

This is my favorite hymn. Verses 2 & 3 bring a comforting peace & assurance of forgiveness and verse 4 reminds me of our greatest hope realized when we see Jesus!

In the church band I'm in, we sing a very upbeat version of this song and it always gets a great response from the congregation.
