1st Peter 4:

 

8 Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.

meaning, when presented in love, everything reflects back to you, thoughts, actions, words. It is encouraging us to forgive like Jesus would, for Love covers over a multitude of sins.

The previous verse doesn't make it clear to me. Is he saying that loving  others helps to cover your own sins or their sins?

We must forgive others. God has left us no option about that. But I believe the verse goes beyond that. A person who has forgiven and loves as God loves hardly even notices the shortcomings of others. They dwell on the things that are like Jesus in the other people and look at them with Godly compassion. Perhaps that makes them more endearing to others as well, but an ungodly person might find that quality offensive and would treat them the way Jesus was treated.

Indeed, all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. 2Tim 3:12 NASV

The reason I asked this question is because I'm familiar with this verse and have read it a number of times, I'm pretty sure that I've heard Christians use it as an excuse for their own sins. It's as if they were saying that some sins are okay to carry out, as long as you have love (or are loving) because love will 'cover them over' or cancel them out.

I know that this shouldn't be the case, but it got me thinking.

I also vaguely remember this being used as approval of homosexual marriage, but it was some time ago and I don't remember exactly where. It may have even been before I became a believer myself.

I realise that the people who use this verse are misinterpreting scripture and possibly doing so for their own benefit, but it made think that it was about time that we discussed the verse, what it really means and what are the consequences of it.

It is God love that cover our sins thus when we love we turn  some people away from their sinful lives 

 

1 John 4:7-11

King James Version (KJV)

7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.

8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.

10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.

6 Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.

2 Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

 

He simply meant love for each other  helps us in weakness to turn from sin 

 

Jude 1:21-23

King James Version (KJV)

21 Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.

22 And of some have compassion, making a difference:

23 And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.

Often it is a Christians love of others that can lead to their conversion, and therefore a covering of their sins.

      I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

      For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

      2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices. 

      So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

      Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end. 
      Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house. 

      Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

      As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

      Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
      Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

      So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
