You are correct about the timing of the Sabbath.

Jesus went to where the Jewish people gathered to speak to them. Since Jewish people who lived outside of Jerusalem gathered in synagogues on Saturdays, that is where Jesus went and later the Apostles went. When Jesus was in Jerusalem, He went to the Temple to speak to people. Jesus purpose was to speak to people and teach, so He would go to where people were.

The actual Sabbath law does not say anything about gathering together to have a service or worship. The Sabbath law says to rest. That is it. Just rest. Do no work.

Synagogues were a development in Judaism during the Babylonian exhile. There is no biblical command to build synagogues. Or to gather weekly. Synagogues were built during the captivity, by the Rabbis, so that in captivity, there was still a place for the Jewish people to gather and receive teachings. Synagogues were mainly built outside of Israel.  Before the Babylonian exhile, the only religious building was the Temple, in Jerusalem. It was impossible for most of the people to travel weekly to Jerusalem, so for the Sabbath, people stayed home and rested.

While the synagogues were and are open on the Sabbath, and get the larger crowds because no one is working, Synagogues are and were actually open 7 days a week, and have meetings/services 7 days a week. There is no command to have services on Saturday, and there is nothing wrong with having services 7 days a week. In otherwords, Jewish people meet in synagogues and have services on Sunday also.

The claim that Constantine changed the day of worship from the Sabbath to Sunday, as an explanation for why we go to church on Sunday, is erroneous. We know from Justin Martyr who lived around 150 AD (150 years before Constantine was ruled)  that Christians were already meeting on Sundays for worship.

@Qnts2 Excellent insight and information... thank you.

@Shiloh: Did Justin Martyr give any reasons why they met on Sundays though?

(Just wondering because I've often found this a curious question.)

Matthew 22:34 But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. 35 And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. 36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37 And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”

@teditis:   Yes, he stated that it was to honor the resurrection of Christ.

Justin Martyr was simply recording that which was already a regular practice in all the apostolic churches.  He said that "On the day called the Day of the Sun, all of us... gather in one place..." since that was the practice of all the churches. But he also gave several reasons, one of them being that it was the first day of creation and the second that it was the day of the resurrection of Christ, and also the day on which He taught His apostles.

The Lord's Day is mentioned in Rev 1:10 but is promptly ignored by those who will not accept the fact that when Christ said He is Lord of the sabbath, He meant to establish His lordship over it by bringing in the new creation on the first day of the week (the morrow after the sabbath).  Christ rose from the dead on the first day of the week and was also worshipped precisely on the first day of the week (Jn 20:19-29).

It is noteworthy that [a] the first day of the week is mentioned in v 19, the Holy Spirit was given to the apostles on the first day of the week, and [c] after 8 days (again on the first day of the week) the Lord appeared to Thomas and was worshipped by him.

The day of Pentecost (the Feast of First Fruits), when the Holy Spirit was "poured out" and the Church was created, was on "the morrow after the sabbath" (also the first day of the week). This was the day on which the Gospel was preached to Jews from all over the Roman Empire, and when over 3,000 were saved and baptized.

Then we read in Acts 20:7 that the disciples met "to break bread" (the Lord's Supper) on the first day of the week.  It is noteworthy that even though Paul and his companions arrived in Troas seven days before, they waited to meet with the Christians on the Lord's Day. That was the day when Paul resurrected Eutychus. This was the day of rest and worship for Christians, therefore Paul told the Corinthian church to bring their offerings on the first day of the week (1 Cor 16:1,2):  1Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do ye. 2Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.

The sabbath was (1) a "sign" between God and Israel (Exod 31:13) and (2) a shadow (Col 2:16,17) of the true sabbath of God (Heb 4:9-11).  Therefore God has repalced the sabbath with the Lord's Day.

The erroneous propaganda about Constantine (which was hundreds of years later) comes from Sabbatarians who believe that even after Christ's resurrection and the establishment of the Lord's Day, they must return to the Law of Moses.  But God has already said that the Old Covenant has been replaced with the New Covenant (Heb 8:13 and all of Hebrews) and there is no going back to Moses after Christ.

Very cool. I didn't realize there was an actual historian who documented this! :)

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
